Sullivan County 4-Hers Pose With Leaders and Congressman

Sullivan County 4-Hers gather on the Ute steps of the Gapliat for a group photo with leaders and Congressman James H. Quillen. The trip featured numerous 4-H members from Helston Central Heights Blountville Bluff City and other areas, led by Mrs Authur Thomas and Mrs T H Pecktel, with Assistant County Agent Charles D Holland as adult supervisors. The annual outing was sponsored by the Kingsport Kiwanis Club.

Scientists Seek Oak Stain Cause

Field Day Speakers Urge Higher Grassland Yields

In Columbia Maryland speakers at the field day urged larger grassland yields and a stronger dairy and beef industry. Dr Glenn W Burton from Tennessee urged better forage crops and efficiency, noting plants must produce more with water, CO2, light and temperature. McCloud of Beltsville highlighted regional potential for forage crops and resistance to pests, calling the Southeast a prime area for expanded prassland agriculture.

Virginia 4-H Short Course Opens At VPI

More than 1,100 youths from nearly every Virginia county gather on the Virginia Tech campus for the 42nd State 4-H Short Course ending Saturday. The program emphasizes leadership, character, and skills in home economies and agriculture with 34 subjects taught by Extension Service specialists. A highlight is a talk by former Miss America Marilyn Van Derbur. The course includes demonstrations, judging contests, tours of campus facilities, and the induction of 200 new 4-H members into the All-Star group. The event features keynote speakers and awards, with participants from Virginia and the southeast attending through Friday.
