Burns enters race for Senate in Tennessee

Representative Joseph W Burns of Tennessee's sixth district announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to the U S Senate. He will abandon his House seat to pursue the longer term term and faces opposition to the nomination from several rivals in the August primary. The declaration follows assurances of support from friends statewide as he seeks to represent the people of his district and the state in the Senate.

Noted Author Dies After Illness in Hospital

CLARKSBURG West Virginia AP Melvilly Davison Post, a prolific short story writer known for mountain settings and works such as Uncle Abnserie and Walker of the Secret Service, died after varicose esophageal veins led to complications. He was hurt in a hunting accident and later relapsed, his wife had died in 1919 and their child died in infancy.

Plane crash kills Galveston officer in Texas City crash

Galveston patrolman Manuel Lera, 26, was killed when a piloted plane crashed in Galveston late yesterday. Kenneth Martin of Texas City was severely injured. The accident occurred as the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff. An investigation by authorities followed.

Washington June 23. Senate Republicans at a conference discussed but failed to agree on substitutes for the finance committee veterans bill opposed by President Hoover. Priest Saves Drowning Girls at St Lawrence

In Montreal on June 23, Father Raymond Cloran a Loyola college prefect of discipline swam to save two girls who were drowning in the St Lawrence river at Verden nes. He reached the girl in greatest danger and helped her until a boat rowed by two other girls arrived, then aided the second girl. The heroic priest, 48, sank to save them.

Four Killed at Grade Crossing in New Jersey

ABSEGON New Jersey June 23 Mayor Anthony M Ruffa Jr of Atlantic City and three others died when an automobile was struck by a southbound Philadelphia Atlantic City express at a grade crossing. Ruffa 52 John Wiley 52 his wife Lillian 40 and Margaret C Siracusa 37 of Ventnor were killed. The car was hit in the center of the tracks, wreckage strewn over more than 100 yards, engine of the flyer disabled. A second engine was sent from Atlantic City to pull the train into the station.
