Women file Civil Rights Complaint in Tennessee
CHATTANOOGA, June 22. A civil rights complaint was filed with the FBI by two women strikers of the Serbia plant. Mrs. Margaret Tart and Mrs. Myra Hastings, of Petersburg, Tenn., say they were arrested on trumped up charges by deputies in Moore County. They claim they were picked up while driving from Fayetteville to Tullahoma on a shopping trip under an old Tennessee law banning traveling for intimidation. Deputies assert the pair followed a Serbia truck and violated injunctions by Chancellor R. Be Lee. The women were jailed in Fayetteville, then transferred to Lynchburg on Moore County orders, freed on $500 bond each, and accuse the deputies of false arrest. The strike against the Serbia sportswear plant by ILGWU has seen repeated violence and arrests.
