Reed Defends Navy Pact Against Johnson Criticism
Senator Reed of Pennsylvania, a founder of the London naval treaty, praised the pact on radio and urged ratification. He argued it ends naval construction competition among the three leading powers, gives a seven year pause on battleship building, saves US taxpayers about 400 million dollars, and fosters international friendship while denying any nation plans aggression against the others. He disputed Johnson’s charges that the treaty dictates Britain’s ship choices and warned common sense will lead to ratification.
