Davis 65 year old farmer on a second degree murder charge in the death of his wife Mrs Davis The state alleges an abortion was performed by the husband or with his aid using scissors An autopsy found blood poisoning following the operation Mrs Davis died May 25 after a four day illness The trial opened with Davis chewing tobacco during jury selection.
Jamestown Tennessee June 17 P C H Woods 25 general manager of the Zenith Coal mine was shot to death and Thomas Ross 18 commissary girl was cut by flying glass as snipers opened fire on a truck carrying workers near the mine. Four others including Sheriff Wilford Smith were wounded since the mine reopened in March after a strike. Woods had received threats but continued to work. The Zenith mine had closed in December when recognition of the union was refused and reopened March 8 amid ongoing labor trouble.
The Supreme Court ruled Memphis University Club liable for state, county, and city taxes for 1925 to 1934, mainly non educational expenses. Penalties and interest were largely wiped out, reducing liability to about half of $25,000. The court found the club’s social and athletic activities predominated over education.
Washington June 17 Secretary Morgenthau told a congressional inquiry committee he hopes publicity on tax evasion and avoidance will deter dodging. He outlined devices including multiple personalities and family business arrangements, warning against the notion that tax avoidance is legitimate. He noted a list of evaders may be submitted later and emphasized the need for remedial legislation.
In New York on June 17 12 year old Mary Maglione was found in a theater passageway beaten and attacked. A physician reported a fractured skull and serious condition. Night watchman Arthur Ostrander found her shoe-less with disarranged clothes and testified the suspect described was a short stocky man in a brown suit with a mustache.
The senate finance committee unanimously rejected Premier Leon Blum's bill for a virtual financial dictatorship. Three firms bid to build a battleship in private yards, ranging from 42,212,500 to 59,900,000. U.S. officials asked world naval powers to cap battleship gun calibers at 14 inches.
Brockelhurst, held for the hitchhike slaying of Little Rock landowner Victor A. Gates, has been found sane by Circuit Judge W J Waggoner and will be returned to Little Rock for trial after a state hospital in Little Rock confirmed his sanity.
Sullivan County officials announced the sale of 300000 in school bonds, to be split equally between Bristol and Kingsport and the county, with Kingsport receiving 75000 for school building improvements and possible bond retirements. Bristol also gets 75000, and the county 150000 for construction and repair of schools in Spraly areas.
Hollywoods perfect pals Jeanette MacDonald and Gene Raymond wed in a record crowd at Wishite Methodist Church. More than 15,000 people gathered as traffic clogged streets and police directed guests, with 1,000 stars inside awaiting the ceremony and a Honolulu honeymoon planned for June 26.
Secretary Perkins announces a three man federal steel mediation board to investigate hearings and findings of fact. Charles P. Taft Lloyd K. Garrison and Edward J. McGrady will set up headquarters in Cleveland and begin work at once. The action, approved by President Roosevelt, seeks to ease an emergency labor dispute halting 100000 idle workers. Non-strikers enter Cambria plants as appeals for federal intervention mount. The strike targets Republic Steel Bethlehem Inland and Youngstown Sheet and Tube.
The Tennessee Supreme Court affirmed the murder conviction and death by electrocution for Fred Richie, 32, of Nashville, who killed his wife Elsie after she sought divorce. Justice McKinney wrote the opinion. The ruling also touched on issues of drunkenness and premeditation in a related death sentence case.
In Richmond Kentucky on June 17 the Magison County liquor option election, won by the dry faction, was challenged by 16 individuals alleging invalidity of the poll and seeking its set aside.
