In Rumania at Sucharest on June 12 King Carol announced that former wife Princess Helen is “already queen of Romania.” He said upon Ferdinand’s death he became king and Helen became queen. A parliamentary annulment restored Carol and Helen to those statuses automatically.
In Eddyville Kentucky on June 12 1940 five prisoners await execution in the electric chair. Ballard Ratcliffe Richard Edmonds John Keller James Grigsby and Lloyd Williams face the solemn procedure. Governor Sampson weighs last minute stays for Williams Keller and Grigsby while Warden Gunn prepares the death seat. A P story notes Edmonds confessed killing Long and the Pardon Commission looks to grant clemency decisions expected later today. Senate lobby panel in Washington also reports no compulsion for Cannon to answer questions on 1928 anti Smith activities.
Chairman Claudius Huston of the Republican National Committee fights back against charges of lobbying and misusing Tennessee River Improvement funds. He says a whispering campaign targets him, asserts he spent his own money to promote Muscle Shoals industry, and explains deposits from Union Carbide were properly accounted for before his chairmanship.

A string of automobile and motorcycle crashes in and near Kingsport left three dead and six seriously hurt. The Studebaker president sedan owned by W L Stanley toppled from a 30 foot embankment near Rotherwood bridge. Albert Praker’s Chevrolet hit the Southern Railway trestle near Natural Tunnel, killing Mrs Harris and injuring Henry Harris and two daughters. a carnival truck then struck Virgil Minton’s Ford roadster. W L Stanley was injured. the two girls Louise and Ruth Harris suffered grave head injuries but are expected to recover. Praker faces murder charges in Gate City jail.
Washington, June 12. Bishop Cannon faced Senate Lobby Committee scrutiny over his 1928 campaign against Alfred E. Smith. A defiant Cannon was ordered to return, poised for further questioning on his temperance leadership and political activities, amid indications no new action would be taken this session.
Palace gossip in Bucharest claims Princess Helen remains firm in not returning to King Carol while her heart lingers for the father of her child. The eight year old grand viovode may push for a reunion as Helen stays in Bucharest awaiting developments. Queen Marie in Vienna hopes for Carol’s success and Helen at his side as queen.

Washington June 12 Senate foreign relations committee adopted a resolution asserting its right to inspect London naval treaty papers denied by President Hoover. Vote ten to seven with three not voting. Resolution to be sent to President Hoover and Secretary Stimson as committee adjourned deliberations until tomorrow.
Captain Archibald Brooks testified at a federal probe about the tanker collision near Boston that killed 46 people. He said an immediate SOS was sent, flames disabled the signal, and efforts by the Fairfax crew kept the fire under control in under 20 minutes. First Officer Manley backed the orderly response with no panic among passengers or crew.
The Lafayette county grand jury recessed with the airplane accident investigation unfinished. Pilot Milton F. Covert and manager Al Gombert faced second degree murder charges at preliminary hearings, released on bond, after a plane stalled above a crowd watching a stunting exhibition.
