In Mississippi June 1 a parade of Confederate veterans, aged and ailing, could not attend the opening of their 4th reunion. About 50 were to march to the municipal auditorium, 25 reached seats by noon for memorials. A veteran son, Robert Lee Avary, urged annual reunions until only two remain. Smith Denies Writing FDR Threatening Note
ALBANY June 4 James C Smith 40 of Albany held in jail in lieu of 1000 bail after pleading innocent before United States Commissioner Lester T Hubbard to a charge of sending threatening letters to President Roosevelt. Hubbard said Smith was arrested on a warrant sworn by a Treasury Department operative James F Johnson. The letter was described as a 20 page burst of religious enthusiasm and its contents were not disclosed pending a hearing next week.
