British admiralty reported the Thetis remains submerged after a strong tide forced the stern under water. Four of 90 aboard surfaced using oxygen masks while the Davis escape method was halted to conserve air for those still trapped.

A five month old, Gerald McCrohan, was recovered and his abductor Beatrice Wood, 21, was arrested with Frederick Bauers, 23. Wood claimed she took the child to replace her deceased infant and told police she is unmarried. Gerald’s mother and family identified the boy. the mother had promised leniency if the baby returned.
The German liner St. Louis sailed from Havana with 907 German Jewish refugees after Cuba denied landing and five days of negotiations. Hamburg-Amerika line agent Luis Clausing said the ship was bound for Hamburg, with a note of possible continuation of the refugee issue.

Premier Foreign Commissar Vyacheslaff Molotoff delivered the Soviet reply to British and French ambassadors confirming rejection of the British proposal. Moscow indicated it would await new plans from London and Paris more aligned with Soviet views of a real and effective agreement. Molotoff objected to exclusions of Baltic neighbors from protection.
Washington June 2 Senate opponents of the neutrality program pressed for adjournment by July 15 to block action. Some senators were reported laying groundwork to delay other legislation, possibly amending the forthcoming corporate tax revision. Senator Borah urged heavy senate discussion of tax proposals while opposing Hulls arms embargo repeal. The Senate approved a 305,267,000 flood control bill, despite economy bloc efforts to trim.
June 2 Jerusalem Palestine disorders left 13 dead and many injured. British soldiers Jews and Arabs among victims. Arab attackers seized a machine gun near Kas hilieh 35 miles from Jerusalem. Bombs exploded in market and Jerusalem streets. Authorities halted traffic and suspended several bus lines. Royal air force aided the search for attackers.
In federal court, former U S Circuit Judge Martin Manton faced questions about hidden income after reporting no taxable income in 1935 while depositing 92 000 that year. Cahill traced 70 000 at Pennsylvania Exchange bank and 16 000 at Central Hanover with 6 000 at Fort Greene. Manton cited loans and hotel sales for funds. He denied wrongdoing as the courtroom filled to capacity and the trial continued.
John D Battle of the National Coal Association urged Congress to limit TVA hydro facility expansion and protect coal markets while Dr Thomas Parran pressed for budget balance. An explosion in Bellevue Ohio killed one and sent eight to hospital from ammonia fumes. Representative McLeod called for moving to international broadcasts regulations.

National guardsmen in Harlan County, Kentucky, investigated sniping at a nonunion coal mine near Liggett while 1,200 troops stayed on duty. Ambushed groups exchanged fire at two other mines earlier. no casualties. Negotiations between United Mine Workers CIO and the Operators' Association were suspended.
Sullivan county officers seek clues in three late yesterday robberies in Blountville area. Blountville High School tools for NYA building project worth 10 to 15 dollars stolen. Barnes store at Holston Institute cash of 20 dollars stolen. Roofing worth 45 dollars taken from L Roe’s Beaver Creek Road site where a new house is being erected. Deputy Pete Ramsey reports no arrests yet.

The Dies committee rejected Maj. Gen. George Van Horn Moseley’s anti-Semitic prepared statement as un American lacking any un American activities. Moseley sought to read the statement during two days of denunciations of Communism and international Jewry but was allowed only a limited version after a conference of committee members.
