Sandy Hook July 27 The defender Resolute defeated Shamrock IV by 13 minutes 14 seconds on a 30 mile windward course to retain the America's Cup for the United States. Resolute led from mid-rleet and finished decisively after a hard-fought series, with Lipton congratulating the victor.
In a clean game the Kingsport Stores team known as T. E. Hursts Sluggers defeated J. Brown Wards Hustlers from the Improvement Company offices 4 to 0. McDannell pitched well for the winners against Bales, and a notable double play Hamlett to Hufford highlighted the contest. Umpire Tipton. The two teams schedule a rematch next week.
Washington July 29 means of averting winter coal shortage and defeat profiteering in the coal trade will be discussed at a conference in New York Monday between four government departments and a coal industry committee. Acting Attorney General Ames says no scarcity now and blame lies with distribution. Wage questions and a report on the Illinois and Indiana fields may also be raised for the president.

Toronto July 28 Fire Marshals president John G Gamber urged careful scrutiny of every suspicious fire as fire insurance writes on inflated valuations. He said business has been too good for incendiarism amid high price levels with warehouses stocked and firms fearing a price crash. Insurance firms are troubled by inflated valuations and possible over speculation.
The steam yacht Victoria saluted Resolute after a close race. Resolute finished at 7 52 15 with Shamrock at 8 05 20 and elapsed times of 5 35 15 and 5 48 20 respectively. Sir Thomas Lipton vows another Shamrock challenge in 1922 if no other challenger arises.

Rev. Father Francis Kelley national chaplain of the American Legion and famed fighting chaplain of the 27th Division was seriously injured in an automobile crash in St. Louis. He sustained internal injuries and was hospitalized during a visit for the dedication of an American Legion memorial. Doctors said he probably will recover.
Several hundred people attended the Kingsport Concert Band in Circle on Tuesday night. The crowd filled the Circle and automobiles lined the background as the band delivered marches and waltzes with encores. Vocal solos by Allen Dryden drew applause on a pleasant evening.
Francisco Villa accepts terms with the De La Huerta government and will march with about 1,800 troops to Torreon where they will be mustered out and land granted for farming. He will retire to private life under government protection, ending his long insurgent campaign.
Governor A H Roberts of Tennessee will arrive from Blountville about 5 oclock Monday afternoon. He will speak at Central High School auditorium at 8 that evening. Local preparations were made in a city hall meeting led by Dr T B Yancey for a reception and escort committee and an honorary group of 15 members. The Kingsport Concert Band will provide music for the event.
A Kingsport court granted Mrs. Oma D. Murrell a divorce from Tom L. Murrell after a high profile trial with over forty witnesses. Mrs. Murrell received a life interest in 300 acres and a 200 acre tract valued at $10 000 for alternates. custody of the two youngest children was awarded to Mrs. Murrell with visitation rights for Mr. Murrell.
The city market operated by local women at Broad Street attracts strong interest. Fresh vegetables are sold below ordinary retail, with beets carrots radishes 5 cents per bunch and cabbage 2 cents per pound. Goods come from Kingsport Truck Farm and returns support a cooperative effort for city residents. Late cabbage plants priced at 1.50 per thousand.
Kingsport hosts Mohawk for two games with 3 30 p m start times Friday and Saturday Manager Spivey announced lineups led by E Pierce Roy Cloud Crawford Bacon Spivey Milburn Smith Hill Straley Kelly and Jeter Hall in the two games after a 2 1 loss to Jonesboro yesterday Milburn and Hall shared catching duties with May Berry listed as Jonesboro battery in the prior game.
Edward Gordon age 22 was held on a $2000 bond by the Federal grand jury in Detroit for attempted blackmail. He allegedly sent threatening letters to Henry Ford demanding 25000 and was arrested when he signed for a decoy package.
After July renovations City Bakery on Main Street will begin operations under new management Saturday. New equipment has been installed and the shop is modern and up to date in every detail.
Sunday night union services will be held on the lawn of the M E Church with Rev H Grady Davis delivering the sermon. The gathering invites local residents to attend at dusk on church property.
The Boy Scouts held a meeting and decided to spend about two weeks in August camping on the North Fork river. A second meeting Tuesday will set troop rules. Allen Dryden, assistant scoutmaster, will lead the camping party as many scouts attend.
Hon Alf A Taylor Republican candidate for Tennessee governor will address the public in the High School auditorium at 7:30 Wednesday evening August 3. He travels the state promoting his bid and will arrive from Sevierville after a stop there. The event precedes the August 5 Republican primary and is expected to attract a large crowd with music planned.
Holston Institute July 28 Sullivan County Teachers Institute opens with Supt J C Akard presiding. Prof W L Gentry delivers two talks stressing rural education for farm support. cites farm wealth last year at 24 billion dollars while other nations total 8 billion. Secretary S G Cross elected.
London dispatch reports confidential U.S. government information that Soviet peace terms with Poland would erase Poland as a buffer state between Germany and Russia. The conditions would likely ease a Russo German alliance and suggest German influence in Bol shevik planning.
J. J. Campion first vice president and traffic manager of the C. C. and O. railroad spent several hours Wednesday in Kingsport examining conditions affecting the line. He visited major plants and returned to Johnson City that evening.

Gardner W. Goold a 59 year old lighter captain was blinded after a foreign sailor gave him wood alcohol in a drink sold as whiskey in New York. Doctors say his sight may be permanently lost and he hopes to be outdoors again soon despite the prognosis.
