Soldiers escape ledge after five days in canyon
MARFA Tex July 29 Two soldiers hoisted from a narrow canyon ledge where they were marooned for five days after attempting to raft the Rio Grande in inner tubes were saved. Sergeant Clyde Ryberg and Private Clarence Hansen stood atop the cliff while Private Harry Buckman of Paris Texas drowned. Buckman and Hansen had entered the river seven miles above the canyon mouth on Sunday about 9 am tied together by rope and inner tubes. Ryberg walked ten miles to a Mexican settlement for transport to Fort D A Russell and recounted their perilous ordeal.
