Thurman Jobe, a farmer formerly of this section now returned to Horse Creek, died Saturday from a self-inflicted gunshot. An inquest led by Justice T. J. Duncan found death by own action amid reports of unhappiness after his wife divorced him.
Joe Long aged eighteen and Clarence Taylor twenty six and married will face trial this afternoon on a charge of assaulting Minnie Dickson fourteen yesterday afternoon in a watermelon patch on the Sensabaugh place near Rotherwood. They were arrested after brothers' complaints. Long surrendered when sought by police. Bail was set at one thousand dollars. Defense by Burnett and Herndon. Prosecution by T. R. Bandy. Hearing scheduled this afternoon.
Prof. Eugene M. Crouch superintendent of Kingsport Public Schools left yesterday for Rogersville to speak to Hawkins County Teachers Association over five days. He will discuss The Best Teacher in the County How to Increase Teachers Salaries Education and Health and Education and Play.
Postmaster J. E. Nelms received a telegram from Senator McKellar confirming his renomination as postmaster. The nomination was supported by Senator Shields and sent to the Senate by President Wilson. The approval secures a four year appointment.
Mr leage, ex ent man at Union Dye Works and connected with Haris Real Estate, with C S Painter of Haris, form firm Burbage and Painter on Main Street over the Garden. Mr Burbage, ex Tennessee State Assembly member 1909–11, says Kingsport offers strong future prospects after war service with the coal administration.
Shannon W. Sharrett was appointed clerk of the newly created Law Court of Kingsport by Circuit Court Clerk T. L. Holt. The appointment was made Saturday and Sharrett began duties at the first session of the court held yesterday in the Garden Building.
Nashville July 28 An extra session of the legislature may be called next fall to provide poll taxes for women after the Supreme Court sustained the woman’s suffrage act. Governors and officials weigh the cost and feasibility, noting possible use of poll taxes to fund schools and concerns over municipal elections and voter importation.
Sullivan County farmers and stock raisers will attend a better farming meeting at the city hall tomorrow night at eight. County agent H. M. Cox says the aim is to foster greater interest in the dairy department of local farms. M. R Hutton, dairy husbandry specialist, will speak on dairying and educational value of the lecture.

The Department of Justice plans a likely statement this week on the big five meat packers Swift Armour Morris Cudahy and Wilson The FTC report says they control 28 of 50 principal market yards and influence daily livestock prices They are accused of discriminating against independents manipulating prices and restricting supply The National Association lists 391 American murder victims in Mexico with five more named including Allen Mc Coy Sr and others linked to violence in 1913 1919 and 1915 The report also notes bearer warrants as a device to hide true ownership and evade taxes
President Wilson orders the State Department to request Japan to publish all Shantung settlement documents and verbal agreements. If refused, the United States will publicize the information to reassure China and the American public that the settlement was fair. The White House seeks transparency while avoiding offense to Japan.
United Press reports Frank L. Polk arrives in Paris to lead the American Peace Delegation replacing Secretary Lan sing. He may carry new White House instructions on Thrace but American stance favors Bulgaria's rights to the territory. The Thrace settlement remains the Bulgarian treaty hurdle to be presented to Bulgaria later in the week. Italian efforts to form an inter allied commercial alliance postwar reportedly struggle, with the United States not endorsing the idea.
President Wilson went to the Senate with a message urging approval of the French American defensive agreement. He said such pledges prove faithfulness to the obligations of gratitude and tested friendship.
The Sullivan County institute will convene at Blountville August 4 for four days under Supt. J. C. Akard with help from East Tennessee State Normal instructors. Prof. E. M Crouch and Prof. R. B. Rubins will assist. State Supt. Albert Williams and Rural School Agent J. B. Brown are expected to speak. All county teachers not yet completing summer work must attend.
Chicago July 29 fifteen thousand street car men struck early this morning, leaving the city’s transportation systems completely tied up. The strike worsens a tense race riot situation.
An address to the nation calling for a congressional investigation into mob violence and lynching was released by the Advancement of Colored People. Signers include Palmer, Bonaparte, Elihu Root, Charles E. Hughes, and several governors, citing 1918 lynchings and urging action to end the scourge.
Mrs. Lula King, serving a jail sentence for alleged laxity, escaped Friday from Blountville jail with her infant. She walked to Indian Spring and boarded a C C and O train toward Johnson City before Deputy Flora detained her at the station and returned her to custody. The baby was reportedly taken to relatives.
Jim Steffey an alleged moonshiner and bootlegger faced Deputy Sheriff Flora while a negro league baseball game was played near a Giles and Robinett store in Scott County Virginia. He fled but was caught in the Kingsport Brick Company yards and pleaded guilty to bootlegging and carrying a pistol. He was fined 50 dollars plus costs and released on 500 dollars bond to return to circuit court in September on related charges.
Naval engineers complete plans approved by Secretary Daniels for a large steel dirigible hangar at Lakehurst New Jersey. The structure will be 800 feet long 265 feet wide and 174 feet high with construction to start immediately.
Berlin July 26 an army order by Gustav Noske minister of defence creates a split between civil guards and the regular army to meet the peace treaty aims reducing the German forces to 100000 men. Die Freiheit calls the move a circumvention and accuses Noske of demagogic masking of military aims.
Kingsport opened its own division of the Sullivan County Circuit Court yesterday with Judge D A Vines presiding for the first regular term. A heavy docket of small civil cases was heard, some by jury, with sessions continuing into the afternoon. Clerk T L Holt announced Shannon W Sharrett as the court clerk, who assumed duties yesterday.
Rioting across Chicago from the South Side to the business district leaves 19 dead and over 150 hurt as whites clash with African Americans. Police loosed pistols but tensions escalate. Mayor Thompson appeals to Governor Lowden for state guard to restore order.
Tokyo reports Kenkichi Yoshi-zawa will lead a special Shantung investigation before negotiations to return sovereignty over the Shantung Peninsula after peace treaty ratification. Johnson City Tennessee July 28 Miss Clara Pettit of Palmyra Virginia has assumed the management of the local Western Union Telegraph Office. She succeeds R L McClain who resigned on account of ill health. Miss Pettit is a graduate of Randolph Macon College with special training for the work. Mrs Susan Walters Dead Funeral services for Mrs Susan Walters who died Sunday were held from the Maple street home conducted by Rev W F Pitts and Rev L D Riddell Interment was at Oak Hill cemetery She was 55 years old and had been in ill health for over two years. Miss Evelyn Scutt and Mr Frank Sanders quietly married at high noon Saturday at Rev S B Vaughts home. They left for Tate Springs and will reside in this city. Mrs Sanders is the daughter of Mr and Mrs A M Scott. She has been active in social and business circles since coming from Elizabethton. Mr Sanders is owner and manager of Baldwin Feed Company.
The Kingsport Garage will open August 1 at Sullivan and Commerce streets in a new brick building. Alfred Vaksdal, a mechanical engineer, will supervise operations and oversee expert mechanics. The shop will offer auto repairs and sell Studebaker and Briscoe cars with a fully equipped machine shop including a 10 foot lathe, drill presses, welding outfit, power hacksaw, grinders, cylinder grinder, bearing boring jig, and re babbiting jig.
Lieutenant George Burgess and Miss Emily Schaefer tied vows by wireless telephone while airborne above Sheepshead Bay during a field day. Rev Dr Alexander Wouters conducted the ceremony, with Lieut Eugene P Hartsdale as best man as crowds of 200000 watched from the ground and grandstands via wireless contact.
