Johnson led Washington discussions on postwar recovery pledges to boost employment and shorten hours. Some 5,000,000 employers were to sign agreements, with forms and envelopes distributed to gather commitments. Chevrolet President Wal S Rothsets announces a 1 cent hourly wage increase for 60,000 workers at Chevrolet and Pontiac plants in Michigan, plus a 15 percent salary rise for salaried staff. About $1,250,000 in additions will be distributed as wages and salaries.
General Muto of Japan dies in Chamyehun Manchuria. In the wake, General Yakushi Biskikul is named successor to prevent interregnum in the Manchukuo government. The senior officer had led garrisons at Morutoxa and oversaw maneuvers from Port Arthur to Mukden.
New York July 27 reports William Abrams 60 vice president of Progrent Mills Paterson attempted suicide by shooting himself in the stomach. He acted during a reported personal crisis and was rushed for medical treatment.
Governor McAlister granted clemency for J. C. Callaway who faced a larceny charge in Hamilton County. The pardon notes the trial judge and attorney general recommended mercy, citing Callaway’s illness and confinement in the county workhouse since October 1, 1932.

Martinsville Virginia July 27 AP James Hampons Howard Hammon and Fred Pardy, ages 12 to 15, were instantly killed when four boys sleeping on the Martinsville Stuart highway were run over by an unknown driver. Archer Dillon was severely injured as the group walked home from Stuart and stopped to rest. A foxhunter named Tatum found the bodies as headlights lit the scene. The skulls were crushed and bodies sprawled on the road. The boys were local youths near Martinsville.
President Roosevelt orders a Justice Department study of the snatch wave since March 1932 and launches a super police force under Attorney General Cummings to combat organized crime. A Kansas jury condemns Walter McGee to death for the Mary McElroy kidnapping. Oklahoma oilman Urser and Albany abduction cases show courts lack cooperation. Investigators probe poison, possible bottle, and motive amid poverty and wealth in a house of cardboard boxes and bankbooks.
In New York Gen Italo Balbo leader of the Italian air expedition from Rome to Chicago, greets Wiley Post after establishing a new speed record around the world. Balbo visits Post at his hotel as he prepares to return to Italy with his 24 aircraft.
A projected Ireland to North America flight ended in a crash at Portmarnock Airdrome near Dublin as five were injured when boards slipped while the plane was being raised. Capt Charles Ulm and three companions were among the injured in a non fatal incident during preparations for a world flight.
Nashville July 27 AP decision on whether prohibitionists will contest last Thursday's repeal win in Tennessee will come at an executive session of dry leaders before a public meeting to protest alleged election fraud in Memphis and Nashville. Dry leader Baytt says they will present evidence of fraud to the Tennessee legislature. wets are accused of stealing the election. Official returns show a repeat victory by about 6,600 with around 250,000 votes cast. Former Gov. Ben W. Hooper will be principal speaker at tonight's mass meeting with others including A A Maysilles and_gett McCain.
Greeley resident T. H. Murphy found a jack rabbit alive in Wheeler county after the animal hopped onto his moving car. Murphy slowed as a hound chased the rabbit, which rode the running board for about a quarter mile before jumping off and continuing on its way.
London July 27 AP The world economic conference adjourned late this afternoon after a dramatic Roosevelt message that challenged critics and promised a recess to seek renewed prosperity. Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald said the meeting was adjourned not defeated but needing more time to reach results. James Cox praised Britain as host and urged greater world-wide agreement amid un employment and bankruptcies as the session concluded in a rare parley.

He notes that frank international dialogue can yield progress beyond formal treaties and trusts continued U S support for world rehabilitation through ongoing economic cooperation.
