Minneapolis July 26 Governor Floyd B Olson imposes martial rule as national guards take charge after failed peace talks in the truck drivers strike. TheDrivers Union and employers committees accept parts of the federal mediation plan with reservations.
Reports detail General Walsh readying troop measures as a strike spans multiple sectors. Longshoremen on the Tagifig coast vote to arbitrate, while 800 Chicago handlers back a plan to end their walkout. Guardsmen stand by in Minneapolis as truck drivers face settlement needs. Aluminum workers’ Pittsburgh strike is forestalled and major construction projects in Hammond, Indiana proceed amid labor unrest. Knoxville hosiery workers join a lengthy southern strike tally.

Italian worker Mario Dal Fiume says he discovered what he calls the world’s most powerful threshing machine. Caught in the mechanism, he was whirled around and tossed two feet but unharmed. The machine stripped off his clothes and ejected them across the work area.

James Probasco, tied to the Dillinger case, leapt from a 19th floor window to an alley below. He died instantly. The incident happened after he was brought to the FBI for questioning. Probasco had been at 2509 North Crawford Avenue, an area linked to Dillinger’s operations, and his body was taken to an undertaker after authorities removed it.
Nashville July 26 Officials say unofficial state health department report notes a rise in summer colds in Tennessee during the current extreme heat wave. Hydration and temperature changes may contribute, with guidance to drink water, eat fruity foods, refrain from heavy meals, bathe and avoid exposure to infected cases.
Leonard Weinburg, attorney for L. Greif and Brother, Inc., said the firm would keep using the NRA label in its clothing despite a Washington order to withhold the blue eagle. NRA authorities ordered the label removal for wage violations, but a U.S. District Court restraining order protects continued use pending a court ruling. The company, a major garment maker with plants in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, will fulfill orders and maintain NRA labels unless the court directs otherwise.
John Dillinger was buried near his mother in Crown Hill Cemetery Indianapolis after a private service altered from today to yesterday. A police sergeant and two officers guarded the mound to deter curious crowds as severe rain drenched the funeral party and Dillinger’s father from Mooresville stood vigil before leaving the grave. The Rev. Charles M. Fillmore delivered a quiet sermon at the Maywood home of Dillinger’s sister Audrey Hancock, avoiding detailed references to the outlaw. Mrs Hancock fainted as the casket was closed.
A Rome foreign ministry spokesman says Italian troops moving toward the Austrian frontier affirm Italy will not tolerate foreign interference in Austria's affairs. Four army divisions, about 48,000 men, have frontier positions but officials doubt border crossing is needed unless interference worsens. The spokesman warned Italy may send its army into Austria if the situation deteriorates and vital interests are at stake.
In Bismarck on July 26, the North Dakota Supreme Court faced ouster moves against Highway Commissioner Frank Vogel amid a Langer era conviction. In Springfield Illinois on July 26 Pal a four month old Russian police dog was rescued after five days trapped in a sewer. Rescuers and a young girl using a manhole cover freed him. Pal dragged himself to the entrance through water and is expected to recover.
