Southern and midwestern hog and cattle producers faced sharp price declines last week as the Agricultural Market Service cited hot and humid conditions reducing fresh meat demand in consuming centers. Hog prices varied by market with drops up to $1 per hundred pounds, while broilers held steady or rose slightly in hot markets.
Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson says the government may sue up to 1,500 farmers this year to collect penalties on excess wheat beyond marketing quotas. He urged fast passage of bills to exempt farmers who use wheat entirely for feed or seed on their own farms, noting penalties could reach 1132 per bushel. The issue, debated since last month, stalled after hearings were planned for fall, leaving enforcement to the courts.
Mrs Blanche Cavin won the 1855 McPheeter Bend gardening contest over 32 competitors sponsored by the McPheeters Bend Community Club. J D Hamilton placed second and Mrs Allie Skelton third. Jinmy Scruggs, son of F R Scruggs, won the latent contest with a Davy Crockett reference for crop relation and older age programs.
