Circuit Judge David Tom Walker told educators in Tennessee that teachers have learned to discipline pupils without angering parents. He noted no reported Tennessee case against a principal or teacher for negligence in teaching, but cited about six assault and battery cases where decisions favored the teacher or principal. Dress Rehearsal Fails Escape Plot At Tennessee Workhouse
Sheriff reports a dress rehearsal escape plot by 18 prisoners at a Tennessee workhouse during a sitdown strike over food and conditions. Clayton Veach of Franklin masterminded the plan with Ronnie Phelps of Nashville. both were jailed, eight others returned to cells, rest placed in solitary. Veach had 60 days left for burglary and larceny. Phelps was jailed for burglary.

Only 4 Legislative Councilmen To Travel To Honolulu
Nashville reporters noted Lt. Gov James L Bomar said four Tennessee Legislative Council members would attend the national legislative conference in Honolulu in August 1923. He named Rep James H Cumbings of Woodbury as chairman of a subcommittee to represent the state, with three other members and a staffer. The council had voted in May to send all 24 members at an estimated cost of 21000. There was criticism of the plan.

State Investigators Probe Shootings In Mining Strike
State authorities investigated Tuesday two shooting incidents in southeastern Tennessee coal country. A high powered rifle was fired into the home of Junior Hamblen, a United Mine Workers of America member, in Griffith Creek Marion County. Dynamite was found near R. Sitz’s service station. No injuries were reported.

Sheriff Quells Racial Tension in Somerville
In Somerville Tennessee a clash between white and Black youths around the courthouse led to two demonstrations attended by hundreds. Sheriff C E Pattat said four then two arrests raised total detentions to 43 as officers used smoke bombs and a threatened fire hose to break up crowds. A Negro leader Lester McKinnie urged voters to register while Sheriff Pattat bolstered force to deter violence.
