NASA outlined Ranger 1 as a 675 pound test craft to launch from Cape Canaveral and reach a 37 500 mile high orbit before a projected September perigee. The probe will ride an Agena B stage to a 23 800 mph velocity and is not aimed at the moon, with a possible Earth plunge or solar escape.
Soviet trawler equipped with radar cruised within 20 miles of the Atlantic landing zone of Virgil Grissom. NASA officials noted no steps to curb future suborbital flights as recovery forces tracked the trawler. Grissom, his wife Betty, and two sons planned a Newport News return after a 16 minute flight ending with Liberty Bell 7 sinking in 16,800 feet of water. The astronaut survived by detaching his helmet and inflating a neck collar to stay afloat.

Eastman Kodak reports half year sales near level with 1960 while net earnings fall. Consolidated U S sales for 24 weeks ended June 13 total 414,349,963, slightly below 417,221,937 prior year. First half earnings 49,337,937, or 1.28 per share, down about 10 percent. Kodak expects 1961 sales to compare favorably if economy improves, though costs and development expenses temper earnings.

John Wesley King 49 died at Manal Clinic Monday from injuries in a car accident near Burnsville NC. A self employed brick mason born in Yancy County and longtime Kingsport area resident, he was married to Virginia Haney. Survived by wife, parents, sister Pearl Moneyhun, half-brother Al barn King. Funeral 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bible Baptist Church. Burial at On Hill Cemetery. Nephews as pallbearers. Body to be moved from Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home to residence Green Village Tuesday.
