Rescue teams dug through fresh snow on Mount Baker seeking four missing students after an avalanche trapped six hikers. Two victims, Alice James of Arlington and Julius Dornblatt of Bellingham, were recovered. the others named Viena Fisher, Maynard Hant, Hope Waltman, and Beulah Lindbergh remain missing.
Tennessee expected generally fair tonight and Tuesday with scattered afternoon thunder showers Tuesday. Virginia largely cloudy with scattered thundershowers tonight and Tuesday, little temperature change. Kentucky mostly cloudy with local thundershowers Tuesday and tonight, little temperature change.
Thomas Boyce, 26, a golf course worker and father of three, confessed to strangling 11-year-old Elizabeth Debrukker and burying her near Harrison Hills. He denied rape, stated he dumped the body in a shallow grave, and said the girl vanished Friday afternoon after being lured from a golf course. Prosecutors planned murder charges and a grand jury set for September. Boyce will be held in Indiana police facilities to await formal filing.
Secretary Hull said the United States observes with concern the rising number of Japanese American incidents in China. He announced settlement of two assaults on four American missionaries and noted a navy protest over the mistreatment of Warrant Officer Robert A. Butter by Japanese sentries at Hankow. A full navy report was forwarded by Admiral Yarnell.
Scott County officers sought the identity of the driver after a car ran off Highway 23 near Gale City injuring two Gale City youths. Robert Skein 18 and Cantley Reed 26, were hurt but not seriously. Owner 48 Hendl Ward of Elizabethan and a girl were jailed on public drunkenness charges. Ward knew the driver as Mack.

Atlanta July 24 Baptist leaders urged action on religious persecutions abroad at the sixth Baptist world congress. Dr J H Rushbrooke of London reported on five years since Berlin, noting shrinking liberty in Europe and citing Romania where churches reopenings are uncertain after June 14 orders. Delegates warned Russia and broader Asia-Pacific restrictions pose grave risks while Spain under Franco showed limited signs of liberty.
Miners in Harlan County returned to work under a working contract signed by the Harlan County Operators' Association and the United Mine Workers CIO. The peace agreement was ratified in Knoxville, and idle miners were notified to resume operations today as patrols and prior troop actions loomed.

London July 24 Prime Minister Chamberlain denied any German loan proposal and said the cabinet knew nothing of talks linking Germany to a 6 billion dollar loan. Labor pressed that no discussions should resemble bribes to Hitler, while Hudson faced no resignation despite papers claiming unofficial talks. Halifax and Chamberlain insisted the conversations were personal and not official.
President Roosevelt said in Ayde Park that his talks with James A. Farley since 1928 have not settled the question of a third term. He spoke under an oak tree on his estate, Farley listening on the running board, and warned reporters the story would be uninteresting if he were writing it.

An unconfirmed report from Jerusalem says Rev. G. R. Goldner of Ohia may have been delivered to Greek monks by Arab kidnappers after a ransom, possibly as a down payment with further payment expected. Negotiations center on Bethlehem with messages from Goldner and hope of quick release.
Knoxville reports a drowning tragedy on the French Broad River yesterday during a family swimming party on an island. Bruce Atkins 26 drowned after his exhaustion. His father Elbert and uncle Arthur Atkins 45 and 26 perished while trying to help. Ray Pollard 19, already cramping, drowned before others could assist.
In Winchester Kentucky a deathhouse confession from a convicted slayer who died in the electric chair is cited as a possible reprieve for 18 year old Andy Shelton. Prosecutors say Jack Davis admitted involvement in the Shelton death and another killing. Shelton’s attorney Marcus Redwine says legal steps will be taken to free him. authorities investigate the confession, have warrants for an unnamed accomplice, and Davis has not been arrested. Isaac Shelton, 51, a farmer, was beaten to death near a county highway in 1938. the youth, charged with the murder, was convicted last September with an execution set for January 6 but stayed on appeal.

In Montreal on July 14 a mass wedding drew about 20 000 spectators at Olympic Stadium. After the ceremony 300 people fainted or suffered cramps and dizziness from heat and excitement. Eight remained in hospital overnight, none seriously hurt. The mass fainting was blamed on heat, soda, and running around as the 150 couples wed under the Catholic Workers' Movement.
