Warren G. Harding vowed peace by a congressional resolution and a new association of nations to safeguard American sovereignty. He attacked the League of Nations, urged a cooperative path, endorsed farmer marketing, and called for increased production to lower living costs.
Lincoln Neb July 22 Ohio shifted to its third presidential candidate for 1920 with Aaron S. Watkins of Germantown chosen on the Prohibition ticket after William J. Bryan declined the nomination. Watkins led on the second ballot, defeating R H Patton and others as delegates reacted to Bryan’s refusal. The telegram from Bryan explained his decision and loyalty to the Democratic party.
Washington July 22 Samuel Gompers AFL president says railroad employees are disappointed but will likely not strike to push for better terms under the Esch Cummins act. He notes the wage board award is a test of wage policy, cites averages for section workers and engineers, and argues the act remains flawed while opposing higher railroad rates to fund wage increases.
Asheville, July 21 Sir Auckland Geddes the British ambassador to the United States told the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association that future international relations hinge on American and British cooperation. He asked if expanding foreign trade under British opposition or in accord with Britain would be cheaper and whether Britain should grow cotton in Africa to offset American hostility. He argued that unfriendly actions would not pay for either side.
Columbus July 22 Governor Cox and aides outline opposition program as Aug 7 is set for Cox notification at Trail's End near Dayton. Roosevelt named for Aug 9 at Hyde Park. Cox plans silence in library for acceptance prep and studies campaigns, while White Moore and others map party strategy and possible Kansas City speech invite.
The Kingsport baseball team defeated Afton 6 to 5 in eleven innings yesterday. Milburn homered with two on in the sixth. Hubert Smith scored the winning run in the eleventh after a walk stolen bases and a scratch hit by Jeter. Pierce starred at second base and the fielding was sharp on both sides.

Kolter Holtzclaw, convicted of killing John W. Gabriel at Terrell in Catawba County, was sentenced by Judge P A McElroy in Newton to be electrocuted on September 24, his 24th birthday. Appeal to the supreme court was noted by Holtzclaw’s counsel.
Sam R Sells congressman from Tennessee's first district will give an address at 8 pm in the local high school auditorium on Tuesday August 3. The ruling Republican seeks renomination and has campaigned across the district including stops at Erwin and Flag Pond. Music will be provided by the Kingsport Concert Band.
Four army planes covering a route to Alaska landed in St. Paul after a flight from Winona Minnesota lasting a little over an hour.
Southern Illinois coal miners will strike today after a telegram to William Hutton of the United Mine Workers of America. The mobilization affects workers in the region as of July 23.
Lincoln July 23 United Press Prohibition party leaders began laying plans for an aggressive campaign after the nomination of Aaron S. Watkins for president. The move followed word that W J Bryan would not sever ties with the Democratic party.
William Vanderbilt died in Paris last night. Funeral services will be held at the American Church of the Holy Trinity on Monday morning. Final burial will occur at the Vanderbilt mausoleum in Staten Island New York.
The C. C. and O. Railroad freight depot, begun last September, will finish within ten days. It is among the largest in upper East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, costing about $100,000. Brick, fireproof, 40 by 300 feet, with offices, work room, vault, and modern facilities. Built by O. K. Morgan, chief engineer.
Kingsport plans a new club house costing about 150000 dollars for Grant Leather Corporation officials and employees. The three story brick building at Clay and Sullivan streets will have fifty to sixty rooms, three wings, a central portion, dining room and kitchen, with modern equipment and amenities.

W. M. Bennett general manager of the Clinchfield Portland Cement Plant in Kingsport underwent an intestinal obstruction operation at Community Hospital, performed by Dr. Bachman of Bristol and Dr. Gilmer of Big Stone Gap. He rests easily and recuperation proceeds, with him regarded as a prominent local figure and president of Kingsport Board of Education.
Berlin reports the Bolsheviks have reached 54 miles from the German border with the advance guard within eleven miles of German territory. German defenses are in place along the frontier and there is no firm belief in invasion. Reports of four Reichswehr brigades moving toward East Prussia could not be confirmed.
