President Roosevelt told Congress that America faces far greater danger than a year ago and urged extending the one year active service limit for selectees guardsmen and reservists. He warned disintegration of the army without extension and stressed maintaining full strength and training for more Americans.
German forces report destroying a Soviet division of about 15 000 troops during fighting around Mogilev on the Dnepr front aimed at Moscow. Soviet dispatches say heavy casualties fell on German units. both sides claim advances and setbacks amid blizzard weather and ongoing frontline battles.
Bolivian President Penaranda said documentary proof showed Ernst Wendler plotted to meddle in domestic affairs. Police described Estenssoro as head of a nationalist revolutionary movement, which dissolved with a state of siege. Four papers were suspended and three journalists arrested. Defence minister Can dia leads investigations in Cochabamba as Wendler prepares to depart for Berlin within a week.
City and County leaders plan a 10 a.m. Tuesday meeting in Kingsport to coordinate a scrap aluminum drive. Judge T R Bandy directs county efforts, with 4 H clubs canvassing neighborhoods and depots at district chairmen homes. The statewide drive, under Governor Prentice Cooper, aims to supply aluminum for arms makers.
The civilian defense office reports a surge in the aluminum salvage drive with volunteers collecting pots, auto parts, and utensils. Officials estimate 30 to 40 million pounds of scrap could be recovered, far above the earlier 20 million target, aiding aircraft and tank production.

Hoke Scott Culbertson, 20, will join the V-3 reserve to study radio after his graduation from Church Hill High School. William Edward Hance, 19, will become an apprentice seaman in the regular navy. William Alonzo Sexton, 19, formerly of Huntsville, also enters the ranks after Sullivan High School near Kingsport.
The Lynn Garden PTA will hold a meeting Thursday at 2 30 p m at the Lynn Garden school. All members are urged by officials to be present.
Beverly Hills Calif Lew Fields longtime partner Joe Weber mourns at the bedside with Fields wife and children as the 74 year old comic dies after illness. Fields and Weber built a legendary Broadway team with hits like Hit the Deck A Connecticut Yankee Present Arms and Hello Dolly later appearing in Life of Lillian Russell. Funeral services scheduled today reflecting a career that began in 1876 in New York and spanned stage music halls and film.
London reports say Britain's V for Victory propaganda drive to summon underground resistance in German occupied Europe is the war’s first pitched campaign. BBC broadcasts in 17 languages and Colonel Britton urge more V signals as Britons claim mass mobilization of a European underground.
Thomas M. Wilson of Tennessee was nominated by President Roosevelt to be commissioner of India with the rank of minister. Wilson, 60, a veteran foreign service officer, becomes the first United States diplomatic representative in India. He has served as consul general at Calcutta and was consul at Bombay from 1922 to 1927.
In Kingsport a jury returned verdict for the defendant in the detainer suit Lott Gott v Kyle Fields. At noon another jury acted on R. P. Moss vs Hubert Clay and Douglas Morris seeking 3000 for personal injuries and 800 for property damage from a February 16 wreck.
In city court this morning Judge Napoleon Bond fined a man $50 for drunk driving and suspended his license six months. A second $50 fine was levied for reckless driving after striking a parked car on the Bristol highway. Other fines included $15 for speeding and $3.50 for illegal parking. One defendant forfeited a $10 cash bond for assault and battery. another paid the same for a guilty plea. Five were fined $15 for public intoxication with six more forfeitures recorded.
C G Whitey Sola of the American Red Cross will conduct a water safety course at the Municipal Swimming Pool daily through Friday. Open to anyone over 18 with prior certificates, the classes cover swimming life saving and small boating safety. No charge for course or pool admission. Pool supervisor Bob Beck notes benefits for local swimmers and boaters. This is Kingsport’s last free advanced water safety course this summer.
Acting Secretary of State Washington-Sumner Welles said the United States had information that Germany planned new aggression against remaining independent European states. He spoke at a press conference and did not detail the steps. He also pledged full support to Bolivia amid an alleged Nazi coup and the expulsion of the German minister.
A group of middle aged American civilians led by Gen Wade Hampton Hayes staged a fog shrouded attack on a British airfield headquarters to seize maps and secret documents. The exercise involved 300 to 500 British troops with Bren guns and machine guns and included a golfer a strolled photographer and a dog assisting in gathering intel.
Three people sustained injuries in weekend traffic incidents reported by Holston Valley Community Hospital. On Horse Creek road a truck tire blowout sent two men down an embankment near Sullivan school injuring Oliver Edward Jones and Alfred Lovelace with arm and face lacerations and back strains. A separate Saturday crash left Holt Strupe with a scalp laceration after being struck by a passing car. he was treated and released.
