American air force units mounted a large assault on northwest Germany and targets along the Baltic coast including Peenemunde and Zinnowitz. Bombing focused on an aircraft factory at Friedrichshafen and an airdrome at Memmingen. Reports say heavy bombers and escort craft penetrated near Berlin and struck multiple rocket and research sites.
War secretary Sir James Grigg announced 23 additional Allied airmen killed by captors. Eden had said 50 fliers were shot on June 23. The War Department announced the arrival of a Brazilian expeditionary force in Naples on July 16 to join Allied armies in operations on the Italian front. The force has trained for an extensive period and will participate in joint operations in Italy.
