Across the nation labor tensions ease as San Francisco moves toward arbitration to end the longshoremen dispute. Police and vigilantes clash with radicals while Oakland guards man waterfronts. Miners return to work in Alabama, mills idle, and truckers strike actions expand with mediation efforts and potential sympathy actions.
Henry Berretta of Shelby County drives to market in his truck to settle a payment due. He visited a used car lot yesterday, handed a salesman a sack stuffed with 2,750 dimes and left in a larger truck.
Denver AP reports Charles Wyman, 76, a City Park Zoo keeper, was killed by two grizzly bears Teddy and Lady Yellowstone after they attacked him in the bear pit and dragging him through the pool water. the bears were killed afterward.
In Alabama, 8,000 red ore miners left the mines, ending their strike. The textile strike lingered with 15,000 workers and unclear outcomes. Ratmund mines' workers ended their walkout after agreeing to return to work, having been out since May. The article notes a pay increase in a contract and suggests continuation on page six.
Los Angles July 18 A defense witness opened testimony in the Morals case stemming from the death by own action of Dive Allen former head of the Central Casting Bureau. The defense claims the state charges are a frame up and called Mrs Myra Mckinney Russell secretary of the Motion Picture Supporting and Es Player Association to testify. Continued on page six.
In Bismarck on July 18 two figures disputed authority as Lt Gov Ole Olson, acting governor, urged withdrawal of guards and end to martial law set by William Langer after his felony conviction and ouster ruling by the state supreme court. Olson also voided a call for a special legislative session, while Langer vowed to resist by force if needed in the power clash.
A Southern Furniture Association attack on a Knoxville relief factory aims to supply 4100 jobs. J. T. Ryan of High Point NC argued private firms would be undercut, while Colonel Walter Simpson said the TVA would buy furniture for relief families. Simpson plans to proceed with the factory and mattress production on relief rolls despite protests.
New York July 18 AP Wall Street buzzed over rising Tennessee Public Service Co bonds after TVA arranged to buy the Knoxville company’s properties for 6,058,050 dollars. Bonds climbed from 400 to about 940 per 1,000, with 960 needed for final deal. National Power and Light, parent of TPS, owns most stock. TVA reassurances earlier had calmed fears of dilution.
Governor Langer defied the North Dakota supreme court and placed Woestake under martial law, calling out the state militia in a bold confrontation over authority.
Berkeley July 1 The NRA chief labeled the Bay Area general strikes as civil war and a menace to government in a UC Berkeley address. He warned economic strangulation by labor actions harms the nation and urged responsible elements of organized labor to purge the blight immediately.
Neal Myers, a University of Oklahoma pharmacy student, is charged with murder, alleged to have plotted an abortion to prevent motherhood in the death of Marian Mills, beauty queen. Autopsy findings were inconclusive, but physicians say death resulted from natural causes. Hazel Brown, a cook, identified as a material witness, linked the events to a quack remedy. Myers disappeared after leaving the Brown apartment and was last seen in Brownsville Texas and Matagorda Mexico. County Attorney Updegraff says the charge is based on an attempted abortion with unknown instruments and medicine of unknown quality.

Hartsdale authorities reopen the mystery case of Robert Connor after five frantic days of search. A shoe was found near the thicket where the child was discovered, reviving official interest in the affair.
Miss Pauline Trollinger nineteen and Miss Nora Baker twenty eight died and were critically hurt after shooting themselves in what police called a death by own action pact born from romantic disappointment. Notes to parents said they could not get the men they wanted and asked to be buried together.
Senator William Gibbs McAdoo and Eleanor Wilson McAdoo faced a court inquiry by Judge Frank C Collier into their divorce finalized a day earlier. The inquiry questioned process compliance while affirming the decree stands. Custody of Eleanor and Faith was awarded to both parents. the couple formerly resided in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Knoxville July 18 AP reports the Tennessee Pharmaceutical Association convention proposed a state law to prohibit sale of sexy salacious filthy magazines. G W Fillauer of Chattanooga chairs the Trade Interstate committee and the measure will be voted on tomorrow. The group pledges to rid Tennessee of what they call a great menace to youth and to protect parents. Mrs George Lamar of Memphis elected auxiliary president with Mrs Robert Ferrell named honorary president. Other officers include Mrs Harris Moseley Knoxville secretary and Mrs Wayland Mitchum first VP.
San Francisco July 18. A arbitration plan gave hope to Bay Area amid the Pacific coast maritime dispute as union leaders urged a showdown and vote to arbitrate while shipowners recognize maritime unions. The move came during a 7 hour meeting where 207 voted yes to 130, aiming to end the general strike crippling transit for 1.3 million people. 30,000 East Bay workers joined the walkout as police arrested over 300 radicals and vigilante groups raided communist HQs.
Chicago July 18 William A Green president of the American Federation of Labor said the San Francisco strike was local in character and had no national significance for organized labor. He stated the strike originated with the workers directly involved and local groups that assumed authority must accept responsibility.
National guardsmen controlled San Francisco waterfronts while patrols toured East Bay towns to aid police amid spreading strike unrest. NRA chief Hugh Johnson branded the general strike a bloody insurrection at Berkeley, as labor board official P A Vanaghue arrived from Washington. Senator Wagner rushed to Portland to assess threats, meeting Oregon Governor Meier who said no program was outlined. A turbulent San Francisco general strike committee urged a peace call at a labor temple gathering.
