Kerosene used to kindle the kitchen fire caused a blast and burns that killed Betty White fifty, and injured her husband B F and son Ben. The Nelsons Ridge home burned as neighbors fought the blaze with buckets. Betty died at Community Hospital six hours after the accident.
Riverton Kansas July 13 Miss Bel Henderson known as the Sunflower girl runs a six acre sun flower farm. She hires all field work but oversees growth and harvest. Her Mammoth Russian sunflowers reach 20 to 22 inches, she yields seed for three times market price and preserves blossoms for winter sale. Ensilage crops bring $10 to $12 a ton, making it the best paying farm in Kansas for its size.
Mayor Dobyns and Recorder Brad Ley signed and delivered Saturday bonds totaling 25 500, bringing this week’s Dale Street Improvement District bond deliveries to 52 500 by the city.
Blountville Tennessee July 15 Despite opposition a Sullivan County court house project moves forward with plans for a $50 000 brick building two stories plus basement. Architects Burnett and Brown expect plans by June 5 bids opened August 5 and construction to start by August 15. The structure will feature Bedford limestone facing steam heat running water and lavatories with county chancery on the first floor and circuit court on the second.
In Nashville Indiana a week long revival at Elkinsville Methodist Episcopal Church ended abruptly when the minister Rev A Parks faced a volley of eggs from congregants. He criticized dress tobacco spending and colleges before an escape through a window. He later left for Brown County.
Clyde Jones a 16 year old near Erwin Tennessee died Friday after attempting to pull a chicken from a 60 foot well He held a rope and climbed the wall as rocks loosened sending sand and debris into the shaft His body was recovered after seven and a half hours under thirty feet of debris
In Port Arthur Texas July 14 a street car dispute over a negro smoking near a woman passenger sparked a clash between about two dozen blacks and twenty whites. One white man and one black man were seriously injured, with several others injured as police scrambled to break up the melee.
Senator Norris of Nebraska told the Senate he will vote against ratification of the peace treaty unless the Shantung provision is amended. The July 15 speech was carried by United Press.
Sullivan County tax assessor Dan G. Hamilton says farmers now favor cash-value property assessment for 1920. He notes initial opposition gave way after learning it lowers tax rates and equalizes taxes between large and small property owners. Strongest resistance comes from large farm owners not paying proportionate to land value.
Kingsport Tanneries will raise daily capacity from 100 to 500 hides with four new factory units nearly completed. President R Y Grant says the expansion adds a leather dressing carrying shop for belting and saddlery and will employ about 300 workers at full operation. He notes strong leather demand and heavy export orders boosting prices and sustaining growth.
Montgomery July 14. The first White House of the Confederacy will not be destroyed. Mrs. Belle Allen Ross, secretary of the White House Association, announced after returning from La Grange where she completed the purchase from the Danby estate.
The Mutual Motors Co organized this month to engage in automobile and repair work will be capitalized at 25000 dollars. President C J Kesner announced that incorporation papers will be filed tomorrow. W B Hill is secretary and treasurer. A garage on Shelby street between Market and Main is under construction and expected to be completed by August 1.
Hawkins County votes to issue 158000 in bonds to leverage 450000 in state and federal aid for Tarvia surfaced highways. Projects include a diagonal route Grainger to Sullivan, Rogersville to Sneedville via Lee Valley, and Rogersville to the Hancock County line toward Jonesville Virginia. Total road spend aims at 308000 with 58000 for cross roads.
Sullivan County holds a lower tax rate and a smaller assessment base than most eastern Tennessee counties. Despite a recent 20 cent per $100 increase, Sullivan’s rate remains below Washington Carter Unicoi and Polk Counties. State and county taxes run $2.50 per $100 here, while neighboring counties report higher rates and assessment levels averaging about one third compared with Sullivan’s roughly 24 percent.

Weatherly Pennsylvania July 13 a large black bear visits Eurena Park seeking shade near a cool spring. Residents report sightings by various townspeople while deer elk and wild rabbits appear around the town and a brown eight inch snake was killed on the main street this week.
Oklahoma farmers have expanded their sheep herds by more than 100 percent since 1910, reflecting growing livestock production and demand.
Johnson City Tennessee reports a new police force actively curbing speeding. Drivers paying fines have contributed at least 10.40 to the city treasury with some doubling that amount as the force lowers speeds from about 40 mph to 10–12 mph. Some residents complain of heat and time lost, while a motorcycle officer canvasses former speedways. Enlarge Grain Elevators at Model Mill adds twelve elevators, 100 foot tall concrete and steel tanks, increasing capacity to about 250000 bushels.
The Kingsport High School audience enjoyed a staging of The Taming Of The Shrew directed by Edward Waldmann. Cast members included Blanche Cook as Katherine and Ruth Bennett as Bianca with strong acting from Roy Barger and Preston Yoakley. A. D. Brockman led the cook role while Lucy Edwards and Katherine Walker sang with a supporting choir and musicians.
General Pershing drew a roaring crowd in London as he arrived for the peace celebration on Saturday. Thousands lined the station area as bands played allied national anthems and officials hosted a reception for him.

Berne, July 14. Several steamers have arrived at Rotterdam with American coal for Switzerland. This coal costs from $34 to $36 per ton, against $25 for German coal. The American coal, however, is delivered unconditionally, while Germany, France and Belgium require return shipments of cattle, condensed milk, cheese and other products.

Pittsburg July 15 United Press. Judge Thomson ruled that beer containing more than one half of one per cent alcohol violates the war time prohibition law. The suit argued the internal revenue department lacked authority to fix the limit.
Paris July 14 crowds line the Champs Elysées to honor Allied armies in a Victory parade under the Arc de Triomphe. Marshals Joffre and Foch pass as General Pershing and American troops are acclaimed, with wounded French soldiers given the honored place and attention from cheering crowds.
Washington July 14. Director Chomely Jones of the War Risk Bureau urges Congress to revise government life insurance so service members can keep coverage after military service. The key proposal allows lump sum payment to beneficiaries or payments over years instead of annual installments over twenty years.
Herman R. Griffith manager of the Coca Cola Bottling Works was found dead in an empty gasoline tank at the rear of the West Main street plant. Workers believe he entered to clean it and succumbed to fumes. a physician said he had been dead about thirty minutes. Griffith, from Jellico Tennessee, had been in the city eleven months with his wife living on West Main.
