Vice Admiral Chuishi Nagami, who directed the Pearl Harbor strike, is reported dead on Saipan along with about 16,000 Japanese as Admiral Nimitz announces continued US task force attacks on Guam and the Saipan breach. Marines seize Maniagassa Island guarding Saipan’s Tanapag harbor and air bases on Saipan and Tinian neutralize Nipponese facilities. The Tokyo radio claims renewed strikes on Guam, though unconfirmed.

Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr aged 55 died of a heart attack as he rested in a captured German truck on the Normandy battlefield. He had just completed a day of guiding Fourth Infantry Division troops, was a deputy commanding general, and survived by his widow Eleanor and four children. He previously served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France, and led amphibous landings with the First and Fourth Divisions. His death occurs as plans shift to bury him in France today.
Allied air raids strike Budapest outskirts targeting Fanto Shell Kealar and Hungary Petroleum refineries with a total capacity of 358000 tons. Liberators also hit Petfurda Oil Works and Ferencvaros yards as Nazi fighters clash. Milan and Mantua rail yards in Italy also attacked.
War Department announces Lt Gen Ben Lear will command the Army ground forces, relieving Lt Gen Lesley J McNair who takes an overseas assignment. McNair, who led the forces since March 1942, was wounded in North Africa in 1943 during an inspection trip. Lear, born in Hamilton Canada May 12 1878, rose from enlisted soldier in 1898 to general officer, previously commanding the Second Army at Memphis titled during 1942.
Lieut. Paul Duncan, 22, a fighter pilot, is reportedly being held by Germany as a prisoner of war after being missing in action since May 16. His parents Mr and Mrs W H Duncan of 117 East Ravine Road say the War Department notified them of his capture.
Allied dispatches report German forces pulling back along the Cherbourg peninsula under increasing artillery fire. American units advance from Lessay toward St Lo while Caen remains quiet, and Bradley's forces push toward St Germain and Beauvais with several villages falling to Allied control.
Funeral services are set for 20 year old Kate Rigsby of Kingsport after a late Thursday night automobile crash near Bluff City. She and three others were injured. two Kingsport youths Franklin and Rasnick were jailed on drunkenness charges amid investigation into the driver.
County agent G C Baker reports drought across Sullivan County is causing severe crop losses. Gardens vegetables and pastures are hardest hit while some areas with light showers show brief hopes. Corn yields fall 25 to 40 percent and families struggle to feed themselves as replanting efforts begin. Baker advises culling cattle to match winter feed.
Allied HQ reports heavy Japanese losses as 45 000 by-passed troops attempt to break the Aitape encirclement in New Guinea. The dawn assault 21 miles east of Aitape is halted after savage jungle fighting with artillery support and air bombardment while remnants, survivors of the Eighteenth Army, press westward toward the coast.
