Allied air forces launched a broad attack arc around Tokyo with heavy bomber fleets and escort aircraft. Brig Gen Hutchison stated Japan’s air forces likely won't engage, while Nimitz noted diminished enemy shipping and continued strikes on Kyushu and Honshu.
A Boston to Miami Eastern Airlines airliner collided with an Army twin engined plane 3000 feet up over South Carolina killing two Army airmen and a two year old boy aboard the airliner. The crash left four seriously injured including the boy's mother and several shaken. The passengers prayers and calm landings followed as the pilots tried to reach Columbia. The Army fliers were Cpl. Robert B. Clapp and Cpl. Raleigh B. Allbaugh Jr. The Army lost a third airman who parachuted to safety. The airliner suffered heavy damage with engines separated and a wing torn. Uninjured passengers were taken to Miami by relief plane.
The Typhoon battered Admiral Halsey’s Third Fleet with 138 mph winds last June 5, tearing the Pittsburgh’s bow and injuring ships. No deaths were reported, 20 ships were damaged but repaired and back in action, including Massachusetts Indiana Alabama San Jacinto and Bennington.
Washington leaders from labor and politics urged Senate ratification of the United Nations Charter as hearings closed. Dulles and Dewey adviser figures testified alongside AFL and CIO leaders. Senator Johnson warned votes may split while Barkley forecast a Monday vote with two weeks of debate ahead.

The Philippine Congress opened its final day of a 30 day session still debating major election and rehabilitation measures. The Senate passed a three month appropriation bill totaling 137 288 628 pesos and sent it to President Osmena. The body backed US base rights and political independence while excluding Japanese residency and evaluating collaborators individually. Cabinet reorganization followed, with defense minister Tomas Cabill resigning and Alfredo Montelibano named as his replacement.
Nelle Mercer's orchestra from John son City will play for a dance at the Indian Lodge tonight. Jerry Bruce, finance committee chairman, announces the Lodge sponsors entertainments to raise funds for a new building to be occupied in the late spring. The dance begins at pm with a small admission for members.
Kingsport police investigated a series of overnight break-ins with three service stations hit. Charles Service Station No 2 and Circlé Station reported tires stolen, while Shell Service Station was under a full check early Friday. Safety Director Lineback cited continued citywide break-in activity.

Crowds crowded streets around Little Store Piggly Wiggly A and B Kroger as soap soap powder and shortening went on sale. Managers reported doors blocked and up to a thousand shoppers inside some stores, with meat buyers ignored for soap deals and even a line of shoppers lingering after shelves emptied. One shopper faintly exclaimed fresh air and another joked about shedding pounds from sweating.
Washington reports Republicans in the House attacked the Office of War Information to cut its current year funds nearly in half led by Rep Taber of New York. They oppose a conference recommendation granting OWI 35 million in the $752 million war agencies supply bill after an original House allotment of 18 million.
Washington OPA plans brief to remove ceilings on some commodities as supply rises. Stabilization Director William H L Davis studies whether to approve the formula or alter it. The plan would lift controls on items with ample supply or low economic impact, with aluminum cited as an early target and jewelry and certain spirits also mentioned.
Allied leaders Ike and Montgomery plan decisions on handling the German general staff and hundreds of prisoners as SHAEF dissolves tonight. Discussions considered breaking up the staff and exiling members, with some officers viewed as criminals while others as military figures bound by orders. The OKH headed staff is blamed for planning conquests and will be targeted to prevent future wars.
Allied forces advance on Balikpapan and Karlango Peninsula in Borneo with flamethrowers and armor as Dutch units join Australians in a left flank maneuver. Meanwhile Australian divisions push toward Jesselton and Mindanao reports describe mopped up areas and a grim account of Japanese civilians killed during artillery clashes.
President Truman split attention between Churchill and Stalin near Berlin while monitoring Pacific war news from the Augusta. Comdr Tyree updated Pacific charts as third fleet strikes against Japan continued and Potsdam plans loomed for early next week. Morristown officer Welna McMahan Pendley promoted to captain in War Department notices.
City Court Friday found a youth guilty of reckless driving and driving without a license. Judge Napoleon Bond offered a choice of an $25 fine or a term in the reform school. The youth and parents have until Saturday’s session to decide.
Col Oveta Culp Hobby retires from the Women's Army Corps after nearly four years to resume civilian life with family and business. Undersecretary Patterson announced her resignation as deputy Col Westray Battle Boyce received her eagle pins. Hobby, 40, is wife of publisher William F. Hobby and former Texas governor.
