Nobel Laureate William Shockley at Stanford had an undergraduate genetics and intelligence course revoked from credit after professors questioned his competence. He has faced criticism and disruption due to his views that blacks are less intelligent than whites because of gentic factors.
Leonard Bernstein will take a year sabbatical from public performances from September 1973 to July 1974 to devote himself to writing music. He will perform at Tanglewood on July 22 to open the Metropolitan Opera season before leaving.
Roger McAfee the pro Communist farmer who posted Angela Davis bail faced harassment threats and cattle poisoning. He and his five sons left for a camping trip in the Sierra Nevada to get a rest, according to a cooperative dairy farm member Jeanne Lawson.
Valerie Kushner, wife of Maj Harold H Kushner held as POW since 1987, will deliver the seconding speech for George McGovern at the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach. Kushner joined the McGovern campaign in New Hampshire and has been a warmup speaker at rallies. She cited McGovern as having the strongest antiwar commitment and spoke after Families for Immediate Release endorsed him.
Attorney General Kleindienst cites FBI Uniform Crime Statistics showing a 1 percent rise in serious crime in the first quarter of 1971, the smallest since 1962, with declines in New York Chicago Los Angeles and Detroit and increases in Houston and Philadelphia. Washington DC posted a notable drop. The report notes regional patterns and specific violent and property crime changes across 80 of the nation’s largest cities.
One black Tennessee delegate shouted at George Wallace arguing the law obligates votes for Wallace. The 49 delegates faced no penalties for defying the rule, while Tennessee figures predicted weak McGovern gains next November. Delegates showed little interest in platform talks.
Washington officials invited 12 meat exporting countries to discuss how 1973 U S quotas will be shaped by this year’s increased imports. State Department spokesman Charles Bray said stronger shipments would help lower U S meat prices, with 1972 performance guiding favorable quota adjustments.
