Foreign Students Visit Big Stone Gap for Weekend

Controversial Kasper in Tennessee segregation case rises in prominence

Frederick Joby Kasper, once a quiet student in Camden Tennessee, emerged as a leading segregationist figure during the Clinton high school integration crisis of 1936. A Columbia graduate who later ran bookstores in Greenwich Village and Washington, Kasper became known for anti integration rhetoric and ties to the White Citizen's Council while maintaining friendships with some Black acquaintances. He is currently at large on a $10,000 bond.
