Fall Loses in His Long Fight to Escape Prison
Washington. Final defeat in his long struggle to escape prison came today to Albert B. Fall former interior secretary. Justice Bailey in the District of Columbia supreme court refused to suspend sentence because of Fall health. Fall was convicted in October 1929 of accepting a bribe of 100000 dollars from Edward L. Doheny to influence the Elk Hills naval oil lease to a Doheny company. He was sentenced to a year in jail and fined 100000 dollars. No pardon asked. Hoover’s censure of Harding betrayers was seen as likely to block any appeal. Two issues loom: whether Fall will accept a one year and one day sentence to permit transfer to a better climate prison. The idea followed from Justice Reiley.
