Four Car Pileup Injures One At Highway Junction

A four car crash at the Highway 23 John B. Dennis By Pass intersection injures one person and leads to a reckless driving charge against 19 year old Emily Kern of Clinchport Virginia. Kern’s rear end collision sparked further impacts, with others suffering minor injuries. gas spilled necessitating fire department cleanup. Kern faces City Court trial Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Norton Plant Opens Monday Norton garment plant to start limited operations

Norton Garment Co plans a limited Monday opening by initial production ahead of a completed building. Workers will sew as plumbing and interior work finish. Operators Dewey Garrett and John Addington said the plant must begin soon to meet back to school contracts within six weeks. full operation eyes about 60 employees.

Bristol student steals show at Boys State campaign

Tommy Spahr of John Battle High School Bristol electrified 390 Boys State citizens in Burruss Hall Virginia Tech with a brief but lively lieutenant governor campaign speech. Laughter and applause cut his speech to about three minutes as candidates prepare for full campaigning Thursday with elections set for later in the week. The House of Delegates and state Senate organized earlier, and state judges will be chosen Thursday.

Wise Council Approves 116500 Budget in Wise Virginia

Wise Virginia town council approved a 116 500 budget on first reading for the new fiscal year. Engineers reported tests near Bear Creek to assess a municipal reservoir site with unfavorable results at Clear Creek. A cost estimate may be prepared for comparison at a special meeting next Monday. Jim Lipps Jr of the Wise Volunteer Dept sent a thanks note to Mayor Douglas Baker and the council for their support. Mayor Baker will travel next month after not seeking reelection last June.

Norton Mom Free On Bond In Shooting

Norton Virginia authorities released 21-year-old Mat tie Mar Rice on bond after she shot her son Thomas Mack Rice 19 in both thighs with a .22 caliber pistol. The incident followed the son returning home drunk and pouring water on his mother while she slept. He was treated and in good condition at Park Avenue Hospital. A court hearing is set in Wise County Court Friday. Officers included Spt. W. A. Jones and Patrolman Rosie Stapleton.

Herbert Emrich of Wise Memorial Hospital serves on leave to oversee the Oct 1 transfer of Miners Memorial Hospitals in Hazard Harlan McDowell Whitesburg and Middlesboro to Appalachian Regional Hospitals Inc. The Miners Memorial Hospital Association will operate the local facility until July 1864 under a nonprofit church aided plan.

Steel Firm To Build Plant In Nashville

Rebel Steel Co of Dallas plans an iron plant in Tennessee using scrap iron rather than ore as previously stated. The Nashville Tennessean reports the U S Bureau of Mines halted a $25 million loan, citing ore grade 15 to 30 percent too low to be usable.

Coeburn Reopens Bids for Sewage Disposal Plant Project

Coeburn Mayor Lacey E Fuller announced the town has readvertised the sewage disposal facilities project. Sealed bids are due by 11 am July 18 and will be opened publicly. Bids previously submitted were rejected as too high. Bid information is available at Thompson and Litton engineers Wise office.
