At a July session in Washington the Republican conference debated Claudius Huston’s refusal to resign as party chair. President Hoover consulted with James Francis Parke and Joseph R. Nutt amid mounting GOP pressure for Huston to step down. Huston signaled a late statement as supporters and critics prepared for a possible showdown.

Four or six river drivers attempting to break a log jam on the Marines river were drowned when their boat overturned. Two hundred lumbermen watching from the banks could not assist. Two survivors reached shore battling rapids as others perished. Drowned were James McAllister L Riopelle O La Caille and A Dupont.
Prohibition enforcement in the last fiscal year arrested 68 186 people and seized 24 373 stills. The Bureau counted about 1 320 000 gallons of spirits and 8 000 000 gallons of malt liquor seized plus 8 778 automobiles. Most stills were in the south with many under 100 gallons daily capacity.
L. W. Flannigan a 40 year old Black night watchman was jailed for questioning after he claimed three men attacked him and set fire to a Memphis furniture plant causing an estimated 60000 in damage. He alleges the trio abducted him before the blaze.
In Washington July 10 the senate prepared to adopt a modified McKellar resolution asking President Hoover for documents on the London naval treaty. Three amendments were under consideration, including one to compel release in open or closed sessions and another to include recommendations on consideration by the senate. Debate continued, with administration leaders anxious to maintain a quorum and proceed to a vote.
At the Continental Coal Company Brock mine in Morgantown about 400 workers are back on the job as operations head Frank E. Christopher says the strike over wage cuts appears finished. The Sands mine at Riversville is given a few more days to resume. if not, it will close and contract work moved to other company sites. The Sands mine has been idle since July 1.
Tennessee shows generally fair weather with warmth continuing tonight and Friday. Virginia remains fair with slightly cooler interior tonight, warmer Friday in the north portion, and winds shifting from moderate north to northeast or east. High yesterday reached 90 and was 93 a year ago. lows were 65 and 63, with no rain on either date. Readings taken at 6:30 p.m. daily for the past 24 hours by C. L. Bunn, U.S. Weather Office.

Broadway impresario Earl Carroll and eight dancers were brought to Jefferson Market court as a warrant for Carroll was issued after a raid on his Vanities revue. Faith Bacon and the show girls depicted wax figures. Carroll had previously served prison time for perjury linked to a bathtub party claim.
Earl Carroll faced fresh legal trouble as police raided the Amsterdam Theatre stage show Vanities arresting nine cast members including Naomi Ray Faith Bacon and Jimmie Savo. Warrants were issued for Carroll and treasurer Louis Lotti who were not found.
Dr. Donald A. Laird of Colgate predicts an era of pleasant aromas replacing harsh industrial odors through a new industrial aromatic method. A small amount of a powerful chemical is added to a bad odor to create a sweeter scent, with potential uses in perfumery, rooms, and auditoriums, though open air odors remain challenging.
Gasoline prices drop to five cents per gallon on the Pacific coast with tax included. Fresno reports five cents retail, Tacoma wholesalers at four and a half, Los Angeles at eight and a half, Seattle between nine and eleven, Portland ten to thirteen and a half, San Francisco ten to fourteen. Independent San Francisco dealers seek state utility regulation.
W. D. MacKenzie was injured in Nashville when a rug on a newly waxed hardwood floor slid as he started to take off his pants. He fell and fractured a neck vertebra with an injury to the neck. A cast will be worn until the bone at the base of his neck knits. The accident occurred as he prepared to retire last night.
Police probing a store robbery found the suspects were barefoot during the incident. Officers describe the scene as unusual as they collect evidence and search for fingerprints and surveillance footage.
At least 144 miners died in a blast at the Wenceslaus mine in Neuorde Germany after a gas pocket was tapped. Only 56 of 200 miners escaped. 49 rescued, all badly burned but expected to recover. Rescue halted as many rescuers became overcome.
Eight American girls and women will be presented to Queen Mary at Buckingham Palace in London. King George may miss the event due to rheumatism, with the Prince of Wales likely to deputize. Guests include Prince and Princess Takamatsu of Japan and Mrs. Charles G. Dawes, who will lead the presentations.
In Kansas heat, crews began harvesting wheat by moonlight to avoid daytime sun. Ole Olson, 45, of Bean Lake Missouri, a farm hand, died from the heat yesterday while plowing corn.
