Circle No 2 of Flint Broad Street United Methodist Church holds a garage sale Saturday July 14 from to 6 in the church garage at 2000 Tallwood Preston Forest.
The Sullivan County Planning Commission will hold a special meeting Tuesday July 10 at 7 30 p m in the Blountville courthouse to finalize the proposed Sullivan County Zoning Ordinance. The Legislative Judicial Committee meets Wednesday July 1 at 7 p m in the County Courthouse Blountville. The Kingsport Board of Zoning Appeals meets Thursday July 12 at 1 30 pm in the council room city hall. An ongoing exhibit of Betty Jo Carruthers paintings runs through July 31 at the First National Bank of Sullivan County during regular banking hours.
Bays Mountain Park presents the two show Eclipses written and narrated by Dr. Lee Davy with showtimes Tuesdays through Fridays at 11 am 2 4 and 7 pm Saturdays 11 am 2 and 4 pm Sundays 2 4 and 7 pm through August 4. Naturalist programs include Limnology Barge Weekdays 3 pm and weekends 2:45 and 5 pm Interpretive Walks Weekdays 10 am Snake Programs Weekdays 4 pm and telescope viewing Thursdays evenings until dark when skies are clear.
The Kingaport Fire Department responded at 1 30 a m Saturday to 92 Riverview Apartments for a circuit fire with no damage. At 9 55 a m Saturday to 1320 Oak Street apartment 1 Fay Justice large has mattress and bedclothes burning with some smoke damage. Kingsport Fire Department logged 11 53 p m Saturday garbage fire at Lee School 520 Myrtle St with no damage. At 7 40 p m Sunday Bills Paint and Body Shop near Netherland Inn Head rubbish burning near building with no damage.
Premier Takieddin Sulh announced a 22 member government to address May army guerrilla clashes. The interior minister post caused struggle between Jumblat supporters pushing for guerrilla freedom and Christian leaders insisting on rule of law. Bahir Takieddlin, Jumblat ally, was appointed interior minister as a compromise.
Virginia 22 independent meat packers planned talks with the National Cost of Living Council in Washington to seek price freeze relief. A. T. Anderson of Smithfield Foods warned of catastrophic pork industry effects and rising hog prices, noting 60 percent of packers have cut back and Smithfield reduced hog prices due to live hog costs.
Washington sources say Phase IV of the economic program may include a rollback of gasoline and other petroleum prices. If ordered, fuel at service stations could drop nationwide, affecting home heating diesel and aviation fuels. Officials caution the plan remains speculative with details to follow in the next days and weeks.

Playboy magazine is not obscene and should not be banned by Albermarle County officials, says Gottlieb a public relations official for Playboy. He asserts Playboy stands in a class by itself with high standards in art and literature and that the Supreme Court obscenity ruling was aimed at hard core pornography rather than Playboy. He spoke in an interview with WINA Charlottesville asserting Playboy has never been obscene and will not be.
Washington based report by outgoing FCC Commissioner Nicholas Johnson, prepared with a Georgetown law seminar, criticizes several stations for weak compliance with programming and employment standards. It ranks KPIX San Francisco highest for employment criteria while WW and WCCB Charlotte fare poorly among top markets, with several others cited as among the worst in minority hiring and local content practices.
Virginia unemployment fell to 2.7 percent in May, below the national rate around five percent. The Virginia Employment Commission notes improvements across leading indicators such as nonfarm job placements, hires, and manufacturing layoffs, with mixed changes in hours and unemployment claims.
