In St. Charles Virginia the huge earth slide from a Bonny Blue slag heap has paused, threatening about 70 homes in Jack's Branch. Sixteen homes already damaged or demolished, 120 miners idled by rains, and aid beamed in from many states as onlookers view the moving mass with large timbers set for protection.

The American Red Cross said a British vessel carrying 10 nurses to England was torpedoed. six nurses are missing, four rescued in good condition, with identities and home towns listed.
