Democratic Party Divided On New Farm Legislation

The Democratic Party faces sharp division over farm policy as some leaders push for expansion of 4-H funding through a Tennessee drive led by Hembree and Jacobs at Union Planters Bank. The drive spans 46 days amid GOP criticism of Eisenhower Benson programs, with Tennessee cited as a top 4-H state. Grant Shrum praised Tennessee’s 133,062 4-H members, aiding planned endowment efforts for the 4-H Foundation.

Urban groups weigh farm policy clash in Congress

A mix of city Democrats and Republicans joined in opposing a House farm bill that would boost prices. In the Senate the Democrat controlled committee drafted a plan closer to administration aims for freer markets. Analysts see a trend toward more government restraint in farming across parties as urban wings push for policy that avoids higher prices and taxes. The American Farm Bureau Federation stands to gain from the shift, while the National Grange and National Farmers Union supported the rejected House measure. Secretary Benson’s stance appears reinforced amid these developments.
