Rogersville Hawkins county court voted 18 to 1 to abolish the poll tax for voting leaving the state tax at 1 dollar. Squire J P Cooper of Church Hill was the sole opponent with Squire Mack Culberson introducing the measure. Oneida Soldier Fred Byrd Found Dead Near Norma

Miss Rosetta Byrd said her brother Fred Byrd 25 returned on furlough from the army and declared he would not go back preferring death in Tennessee. Desert disguise saves RAF airman on long trek home

An airman from Johannesburg disguised as a veiled Arab woman leads a camel across 100 miles of desert to reach his squadron in the Western Desert. He had been shot down in Cyrenaica, hid six days at a waterhole, then walked out with an Arab guide and his disguise, returning with blistered feet and a triumphant welcome. He previously trekked from Ethiopia to the Sudan.

Swift Delivery To Egypt Under Lease-Lend Program

U S ships now sending 20 to 25 American flagged vessels weekly to Egyptian ports via Atlantic or Pacific routes to the Red Sea.
