ST PAUL July 7 AP A tired but unharmed Haskel Bohn youth returned home with a tale of being held captive nearly a week by a gang of women. Police later arrested three men who allegedly tried to extort ten thousand dollars from his father George Bohn. Bohn described being seized at gunpoint, transported to a garage, then moved to a basement before release.
The Twin City Sentinel reports big authorities are pursuing new angles in the Reynolds death probe. It says Smith Reynolds and his bride Libby Holman were allegedly in bed together when the fatal shot occurred. Mrs Reynolds reportedly told officers her account before leaving the house. Ab Walker, a guest, heard a shot and found Reynolds alone after rushing upstairs.
Gate City announces merger of Peoples National Bank and First National Bank. New bank capital to exceed $1,000,000, assets pooled under RG Otey Welch to appraise and combine. Directors from both banks to supervise. merger expected to complete in about a month with operations continuing.
Nashville July 7. County courts lack authority to exempt women from poll taxes. Benton County had proposed free voting for women, but state legal counsel says such releases are invalid. J M Garden hive, counsellor general, calls the county action beyond power.
Gunmen killed James McGee and Vernie Larkin at Del Rio Roadhouse on July 7, wounding waiter George Vanderklan. The attack, linked to ongoing Chicago gang violence, followed a period of quiet and possibly retaliation for prior killings tied to Edward O’Donnell’s faction.
The French submarine Promethee with 46 men aboard sank near Cherbourg harbor. Seven crewmen were saved. Promethee, a 1884-ton class submarine, measures 302 feet with a 20 foot beam and carries a 3.9 inch gun, an 87 millimeter gun, a machine gun, and eleven 21.7 inch torpedo tubes. The type was considered not highly successful in trials. Promethee's sister ships Vangeur and Redoutable completed a West Indies cruise in 1930.
The Prohibition party’s national convention in Indianapolis nominated former Georgia Democrat William D. Upshaw for the presidency on a second ballot. Upshaw said he would withdraw if Idaho Senator William E. Borah or another strong city leader agreed to head a third party movement. Delegates hoped Borah would be drafted as a key third party candidate, but Borah asked that any nomination come from the people at a later convention.
Chicago Cubs star Bill Jurges misses game as police investigate a shooting at his hotel room. A brunette, Miss Wallis Popovich Valli, claims she intended suicide. a letter blames Cub outfielder Kiki Ongler and Lew Steadman for breaking up her romance.
Washington July 7 AP Expressions of pleasure marked Democratic talk as Alfred Smith promised to stay with the party and support the ticket amid debate on a possible third party. Governors, Speaker Garner and others voiced gratification while Curtis signaled possible campaigning if needed. Republican activity centered on Ogden Mills and a Boston speech as Curtis prepared to stump. The reforestation plan sparked criticism from Representative Jones who derided Hyde’s view and urged broader flood control and soil erosion measures.
Superior Judge Lester Roth urged end of testimony today in the 200000 breach of promise suit Myrtle Joan St Pierre vs David Hutton. The judge said the trial is prolonged without new information for jurors and limited closing arguments to two hours per side. Eugene Eben, radio organist, testified for the plaintiff regarding alleged improper relations with Miss St Pierre.

Washington July 7 AP Chairman Collier of the house ways and means committee urged speedy action on a resolution to provide veterans with railroad fare and food money homeward. A $100,000 fund, Hoover proposed to finance homeward transport for thousands of bonus marchers, was approved today by the house appropriations committee.
Moscow July 7 Officials at Moscow airport reported no trace of James Mattern and Bennett Griffin American round the world fliers overdue after departing Berlin. They planned a 2 550 mile leg toward Omsk 1 800 miles ahead over challenging terrain with possible delays in word sharing.
