Khrushchev announced in Moscow that the Soviet Union and North Korea signed a mutual defense pact to deter a perceived threat from South Korea. He cited a coup in Seoul and a 660,000 strong army equipped with American weapons, warning that any attack on the Democratic Republic of Korea would be considered an attack on the USSR.

More than 400 Black and Puerto Rican youths clashed on New York City's West Side as 30 police officers struggled to quell the riot. One man, Julio Febius, 23, was badly hurt. the assailant, James Streeter, 34, was arrested on felonious assault and knife charges after lye was thrown and a knife recovered.
The FBI joined small-town marshals in a four state manhunt for a stocky killer who kidnapped a teen girl from Rockville Connecticut. Denise Sullivan, 15, is missing while her mother and a companion were killed or wounded. The assailant fled in a blue and white Ford across the Utah Colorado river country as planes and ground teams scoured canyons and uranium trails.

A Senegal embassy call claimed local residents oppose Negro neighbors and criticized the diplomats’ drapes. The meeting focused on junior diplomats struggling to buy or rent unsegregated homes at affordable prices, with about 30 still seeking housing. Plans for a discriminatory nonwhite diplomats seaside recreation area were shelved due to location difficulties.
Hoffa gains a $25 000 yearly pay hike and a $12 million dues increase plus expanded powers after a top vote at the Teamsters convention in Miami Beach. Dissenters led by Edward Painter warned autonomy loss as Hoffa sets Friday for reelection against Milton J. Liff.
Washington reports more Americans holding jobs than ever before, but unemployment climbs to 5.6 million as teens seek summer or permanent work. Labor Department counts those employed plus job seekers, with employment peaking at 68.796 million in mid June.
