Despondent young woman commits suicide on Sullivan Street
Miss Martha Upchurch twenty is described as blond and pretty. She drank nearly two ounces of carbolic acid on Sullivan Street near the Hosiery Mill and died at Riverview Hospital. Bystanders and neighbors aided her as she asked for pencil and paper to write to her mother before dying. Her sister cited despondency from unemployment and lack of a place to live as a key cause. Funeral arrangements pending. burial planned in Hiltons Virginia.

Four other men indicted with the teacher were set for trial but continuance requests were denied and the state moved ahead with Acree case. Two Detroit Balloons Break Long Flight Records in Trophy Race
A. A. Rasmussen of Detroit piloting the Detroit II set a 580 mile long distance record in the third annual Detroit News trophy race from Ford Airport to Kinston North Carolina. The Detroit II is one of five balloons in the event with the Detroit II leading after launch Monday.
