A proposed Sullivan County school budget totals 2,116,039.72 dollars for 1949 50 and will be submitted to the County Court budget committee today for approval. The plan calls for a net increase of 978,211.16 dollars, aiming to raise the county budget toward two million dollars.
Blountville Sullivan County magistrates in regular session authorized bond issues totaling 1,100,000 for school and highway projects. The budget shows a rise from 1,101,588 to 1,137,828.56 driven mainly by teacher salary increases, with 3,425,000 in school building bonds issued since 1940 and county receipts of 2,317,870. A deficit of about 47,000 is included in the new budget.
First District Representative Dayton E. Phillips spoke at Memorial Stadium Hawkins County on July Fourth. He praised farmers and military service members and urged dedication to national ideals. He also proposed a rural telephone program to extend private and public telephone service to isolated areas, stressing nonownership by government and continued state regulation.
In Chattanooga Tennessee two to six inmates escaped the Silverdale workhouse after sawing through a window last night. Officials say the men were there for terms from 11 months 298 days to two months. None had been recaptured by morning.
Roanoke Virginia lawyers for 16 year old Lee Scott plan to ask a judge for a modification of his 99 year prison sentence for the strangulation slaying of 18 year old Dana Marie Weaver. Chief Defense Counsel T Warren Messick will argue why the first degree murder verdict should be set aside. If the judge does not overturn the verdict, Scott Eagle Scout and choir singer will likely be formally sentenced.
Johnson City man Harald Bailey dies in a two car collision near Milligan College highway. Diamond Cabin deskman Carl Harshbarger, 30 Route 1 Johnson City, is charged with manslaughter and drunken driving. Harshbarger, in serious condition at Appalachian Hospital, sustained skull and leg fractures after his car struck Albert Parshall’s vehicle. Parshall, of Johnson City, says he rounded a curve and saw Harshbarger speeding. Patrolman Tillie and Police Chief Doc Wheel comment. details on page 3.
Miners renew work under no contract as United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis orders resumption after a 10 day paid vacation. Soft coal miners west of the Mississippi will work three days weekly until further notice. Talks set for July 12 with soft coal operators. contract expired June 30. Related European talks and U.S. security treaty concerns also noted.

Estimated damage topples $50 million across eight states with fruit vegetable and dairy losses likely higher. New Jersey alone sees about $28 million in drought harm and potato losses of $4.5 million while prices rise as heat continues.
A bus and a milk truck collided near Smithfield North Carolina yesterday. The bus driver J R Walton age 35 of Bazemen died, truck driver James Ira Tiley 67 of Bahama, and truck passenger Wallace Flintom 36 of Durham perished in the ensuing blaze. Fourteen others were injured, two seriously. Farmers Talmadge Bizzell and James Jones and a passing motorist Luther Stewart aided bus passengers to escape.
