Allied forces stage July 4 show of air and sea power across Europe. Bombers and fighters strike rail yards, ports, and fortress targets from Britain into Beziers, with Liberators and Fortresses bombarding facilities while others convoy and defend. Heavy losses not confirmed.
Jesse H. Jones urges Texas Democrats to vote for their preferred presidential candidate at the statewide convention. He argues the convention lacked binding authority and that delegates should not be forced to back a single nominee, calling for respect of the voters’ choice and party rules as historically understood.
Soviet forces push toward Latvia and Lithuania as German resistance tightens. First Baltic Army advances along the western Dvina toward Daugavpils while Cherniakhovsky’s Third Army moves toward Vilna and Kaunas. Berlin reports Soviet speed threatens rear areas and a rail link from Berlin to Leningrad braces for impact.
Kingsport marked its quietest Fourth of July in years with perfect weather drawing about 45,000 to American Legion grounds and thousands to nearby spots. Kingsport will host a German tank destroyer with 77 mm guns on Broad Street from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. then transfer to the Tennessee Wastman Corporation from 9:30 p.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday. The display is part of the War Finance Committee drive. bond sales in two days totaled $18,393.75 with citywide totals surpassing $2 million in certain categories.
Democratic leaders reported to have offered the platform chair to a prominent House member after Senator Robert F. Wagner declined again. The DNC plans a new chairman by week’s end to form a subcommittee for the 1944 platform.
