Virginia Extension horticulturist Dr Howard Rollins Jr reports the 1966 apple crop in the Appalachian region will drop about 41.7 million bushels from last year with frosts late in the season cited as the cause. Guesstimates from the National Apple Institute place the national crop at 128.095 million bushels, down from 185.72 million, with Ohio, Indiana and Illinois also reduced while Washington and California show increases. The Michigan outlook is modest, hampered by freezes. The discussion occurred at the annual institute meeting in Traverse City, Michigan.
