In Lebanon Virginia two Russell County men John Jackson and Jack Presley drowned when their fishing boat overturned on the Clinch River near Cleveland. Don Musick swam to shore and called for help as life saving crews from Wise Washington Russell and Bristol counties recovered the bodies.
Three Hickory men A. E. Cline Travis Eller and Ray Cooke were killed when a single engine Cessna 1824 crashed on Holston Mountain ten miles south of Bristol. The plane en route from Tri Cities to Hickory likely ran out of fuel before impact.
Kuwait’s defense force expanded as of dawn to over 20 000 personnel including 10 006 Arab volunteers and 10 000 regulars. Airlift moved units from Kenya and Britain into Kuwait’s Farwania Airport while Coldstream Guards reinforced frontline positions and guards at a key water distillation plant. Saudi Arabia contributed 1800 troops, and Kuwait seeks British aid after Iraqi Premier Kassem announced a planned annexation of the oil-rich sheikdom.
A 27 year old Bristol Virginia man James Charles Tolbert was killed when his car skidded on a wet highway and left the road four miles east of Duffield on U S Highway 23. He was ejected and died at the scene. Passengers Howard Dutton and Bobby Slage, both of Bristol, were uninjured.
South Korea's ruling junta charged ousted Premier John M. Chang and seven ministers with collaborating with the Communists. Also charged were former prosecutor general, former mint director, and eight former assembly members including Speaker Kwak Shang Hoon. The coup toppled Chang on May 16. Maj. Gen. Pak IChung Hi now leads the military revolutionary committee. The regime dissolved the assembly, closed schools and banks, and imposed a curfew while vowing anti Communist unity and economic reform.
A new mayor and vice mayor will be chosen at the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting in City Hall. Incumbent Mayor L P Gregory and Vice Mayor E G Guenther did not seek re election. New council members Ben M Brown Jr and Dr Hugh Rule will be sworn in joining holdovers M H Duffer W W Cawood and W C Hale. The council will pick the mayor and vice mayor from among the five members. Many items may be postponed due to the holiday.
NEW YORK AP Shipping companies moved to resume activity after a federal judge halted a 19 day old maritime strike. Sailings were posted for Wednesday as Judge Sylvester J. Ryan’s order barred strikes and interference by unions and employers in the maritime industry.
The nationwide Fourth of July holiday period raises alarm as eight more accidental deaths push the total to 16 in Tennessee for the first 78 hours of the 102 hour weekend. Traffic deaths lead with seven. other causes include two air crashes and two drownings.
