Crowds fill downtown Kingsport for the annual American Legion July 4 event. A parade features six bands and a balloon ascent planned with a parachute jump, while Roosevelt’s Independence Day address and the national oath mark the post noon ceremonies.
A stormy Sullivan county court session is predicted as magistrates meet for the quarterly session. The agenda includes fixing the tax rate and a 485000 school bond issue to fund a new high school near Kingsport. If approved the present 2 rate may rise at least 20 cents, with the budget near one million dollars. The jail issue is not expected to be raised.

Philadelphia reports that on July 4 1776 the Continental Congress adopted a declaration of independence severing ties with Britain and forming the 13 United States. The document, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, asserts natural rights and the people’s right to alter government, with John Hancock signing boldly and copies to be sent to assemblies and generals.
Wendell L. Willkie said the American navy will soon be deployed to ensure delivery of supplies to Great Britain. He warned that allowing Europe to fall to totalitarianism would reduce the chance to save liberty in America and pledged support for Britain’s fighting men. The NBC speech aired to mark Independence Day and was translated into five languages.
