A woman bank teller, Mrs. Juanita Marsden, was struck by a shotgun blast during an attempted branch holdup in Nashville. A Black man was arrested nearby with bags of currency recovered, and he was taken to police headquarters for questioning. The teller was rushed to a hospital and her condition was listed as undetermined.
A 24-year-old Kingsport man, Henry Hutchins, faces a rape charge for an alleged June 4 assault on a 16-year-old girl in Scott County’s Timbertree community. The preliminary hearing was scheduled in Scott County Court after his June 11 arrest in Cincinnati by the FBI.
Lt Gen Chang Do young resigns as chairman of the Supreme Council of National Reconstruction and cabinet head in Seoul. Maj Gen Pak Chung Hi is named council chairman with former Lt Gen Song Yo Chan as cabinet chief, seen as the real power behind the May 16 takeover.
Wreckage of a light single engine plane was found atop Holston Mountain this morning about 100 yards from the WCYB transmitter. Bodies of two men were aboard but not identified. Plane number N 2105C. It tore through trees before landing on a roadway near the transmitter. A search crew was en route as officials sought missing craft information.
In Blountville this morning the July term juries were impaneled including a grand jury and three petit juries. Grand foreman Sullins Cartwright, a Holston High School teacher, leads a panel with 12 members. The term will pause Tuesday July 4 and resume Wednesday to tackle carried over cases and a handful of minor matters before five murder cases appear on the docket.
A quartet of sky divers from Fort Campbell Kentucky will jump from an Army helicopter at 8,000 feet and perform midair formations before free falling to 2,000 feet. They aim to land in the baseball infield as crowds watch at 6:39 p.m. today and again tomorrow at 3 p.m. Sgt Rodger Hale led Saturday’s jumps after a fall that drifted him to second base. The team includes Sgts Jerry Kidwell Alton Barker and Estevan Torres. Post Office and many businesses close for July 4th. Kingsport city and county offices suspend services.
