Five Day Miner Vacations Start Across Nation
The nation’s 450000 soft coal miners began a five day paid vacation today for the first time in history. About 156000 of them in the southern Appalachian field may not return to work when the vacation ends unless a new two year wage contract is signed. The Harlan County Kentucky Coal Operators association reportedly was not ready to join the pact. Miners receive 20 dollars during the vacation. The union warned that if a shutdown occurs Koppers company mines would be exempt. Koppers supplies Kentucky and West Virginia coal to several steel mills with defense contracts.

Deputy Killed in Milk Truck Hold-Up in Vermont
Deputy Sheriff Ray Russell of Monkton was killed when striking dairy farmers halted a milk truck bound for the New York market. The collision occurred as the truck moved from Waltham toward Vergennes. Russell fell from the running board and was run over. Earlier, more than 6000 gallons of milk were dumped by strikers in three towns. The union seeks 3 dollars per hundredweight for blended milk, versus 1.88 in June.

Eastman Worker Killed in Highway Crash Near Church Hill
John Burchfield 19 of Eastman died after his car struck a truck one mile west of Church Hill Tennessee at 10 30 p m Wednesday. Rain and edge of road contributed to the crash. He died of a fractured skull and had additional injuries. Funeral planned at Longs Bend Baptist Church Rogersville with burial in Longs Bend cemetery. Survived by parents Claude and (name) Burchfield and several siblings.
