San Francisco July 1 The platform committee voted 39 to 11 to reject the light wines and beer plank. A key clash over prohibition threatened to move to the convention floor as wets and drys fought over enforcement. The panel also dropped the Armenian independence plank and kept League of Nations discussions subdued.
San Francisco July 1 McAdoo stays quiet while leading the fight for nominating him amid Wilson loyalists and Palmer Cox camps. Delegates split over whether to desert or rally to a dark horse as McAdoo seeks to avoid formal nomination.
The committee backed a Beckham substitute showing sympathy for Armenians and aid in scope. The platform report was delayed to 8 pm as Wilbur Marsh pressed to suspend rules for immediate balloting, but the plan failed and the convention recessed. Fourteen candidates, led by McAdoo Cox and Palmer, remain in the field with several lesser contenders.
The platform submitted by Senator Carter Glass to the national convention favors League of Nations covenant with prompt ratification, silent on wet or dry, supports Irish national aspirations without recognizing an Irish republic, rejects Armenia mandate, and backs veteran farm aid with no cash bonus, plus labor agriculture and woman suffrage themes. Washington report says President Wilson is elated with the Democratic national convention in San Francisco. He has not issued an official statement but is pleased by floor tributes and a felicitation telegram from delegates. John A. Wilson of Franklin, Pa., confirms McAdoo not seeking the nomination and notes Wilson’s support for the peace treaty.
H A Jeffrey, leader of six Allied shop crafts, halted a threatened June 29 walkout by Pennsylvania railroad shopmen. A general meeting of representatives will be held in Pittsburgh on Thursday to decide next steps, with demands including removal of three foremen and reinstatement of leaders. Jeffrey claimed the railroad offered $25,000 to drop charges. railroad officials dismissed the bribery claim as ridiculous.
City Manager L H Kidd announced construction of a brick four room grammar school for colored children in East Kingsport. Located west of Edgewood Arsenal barracks, the $20000 building aims to anchor a modern colored village in the city plan and will be ready for the September term. Other schools progress satisfactorily.
The Research Council reports lignite briquetting plants at Souris Manitoba and Estevan Saskatchewan will start producing by August first. They expect 30,000 tons this year at lower costs than anthracite and aim to reduce reliance on Pennsylvania coal amid strikes and rail delays.
Philadelphia June 30 Senator Boies Penrose declared the American people sick and tired of Democratic rule and would repudiate the party by an overwhelming November majority. He said Republicans feel confident, the atmosphere is clearer, and issues are defined with sanity and economy as dominant sentiments. He plans personal conferences with Republican leaders in about a week per his secretary Leighton C Taylor.
Kingsport Boy Scout troops plan a 7 30 pm called meeting at the high school to discuss participation in the Fourth celebration. All scouts in the city urged to attend.
Philadelphia reports a new angle in Grover C. Bergdoll's draft dodging era. The federal grand jury may examine claims he worked at the Eddystone munition plant during the 1917 April 10 explosion, while chauffeur Eugene Stecher who aided his escape also served as a guard there.

Guy Hensley aged 11 of Dale Street won the city rat contest by collecting 376 tails at Dr Yanceys office, beating Clarence Cunningham of Brick Village who had 354. He earned a bicycle and 75 Strand Theatre matinee tickets from W H Harmon as prizes as 1539 tails were turned in. He said his dog helped him and he used traps sticks and rocks, calling it a lot of fun.
Kingsport preparing for a large Fourth of July program featuring Curtiss bi planes piloted by Brock and Taylor, aerial stunts by Jersey Ringer, a patriotic street parade, a concert by the Kingsport Concert Band, a basketball game, horse show entries, and a grand fireworks display to honor the Union.

He left Kingsport in 1918, sailed to France in October, served with the quartermaster corps, returned in November 1919, and died at Camp Gordon hospital June 28. Rev W S Hendricks and Dr J H Clifford conducted the funeral at Lone Star with a large crowd in attendance.
