The Tennessee House debated a general revenue bill introducing 26 tax changes aimed at simplification rather than major shifts. Proposals include taxing gasoline pumps by number of pumps, new scale for oil depots, lower wholesale fruit taxes, and reduced taxes on night clubs and road houses to broaden revenue without closing establishments.
Newton New Jersey. National Bund leader Wilhelm Kunze and eight associates were sentenced to one year to 14 months in state prison for violating New Jersey’s race hatred law. Two fined 2000 dollars. seven fined 1900 dollars. They challenged the law by demurrer. judge overruled. Names include August Klapprott, Matthias Kohler, John C fitting, Richard Schiele, Paul Schaarschmidt, Carl Schipphorst, George Neuppert.
Salt Lake City Utah Mrs F W Clements seeks help as four of her sons were bitten by different dogs in the past month Norman 10 Cecil 14 was bitten left leg John 6 lacerations left arm Samuel 4 upper lip bite Mrs Clements appeals to police for action on the dog attacks.
In West New York New Jersey a 15 year old girl named in a morals charge against a Weehawken school teacher who was later found dead after a gas explosion at Memorial High School. The girl attempted suicide by poison and died. hospital attendants reported her condition unclear. William H. Louns bury a 48 year old manual training supervisor at Memorial High School was found in a damaged domestic science room after the blast. Lounsbury had been released on $5,000 bond on the morals complaint signed by policewoman Adele Gerard. His wife issued a statement denying the charges. Police say 100 jets in 25 stoves were turned on during the explosion.
Memphis resident Ross Mathews a former draft advisor found a dusty mail bag in the Shelby County courthouse basement containing about 250 selective service registration cards without serial or call numbers. He said the cards were likely overlooked by draft boards sorting Memphians registered at out of town points and will be shuffled and numbered by local boards.
Justice James C. McReynolds ends 26 years on the Supreme Court with retirement at midnight. He will receive a full $20 000 yearly life pension and plans no observance or interviews. The court is in recess and will reconvene Monday.
Chancellor S E Miller of Johnson City refutes reports alleging Sullivan county courts are overloaded with litigation. He says no term has impeded trial readiness and urges that a new chancery division would raise annual costs by thousands for a new chancellor and higher salaries for clerks and assistants.
