Virginia Senate Passes Liquor By The Drink Bill

Virginia Senate approves liquor by the drink legislation by eight votes 24 to 16 and moves toward final passage in the House after 45 to 44 vote. If signed by Governor Miles Godwin Jr., sales likely begin late this year or early next. The bill requires local referenda, licensing, and a 30 seat meal requirement for hotels and restaurants. Also noted are bond issue bills for education and mental health facilities advancing to floor with two dissenters.

Raiders Attack City in Central South Vietnam

UPI reports Viet Cong raiders infiltrated Da Nang area during Tel festival night. US military police and South Korean troops exchanged fire near MP compounds and a South Vietnamese HQ, with grenades tossed and several casualties feared. Capt Thaddeus A. Duzenski described the assault as stealthy and sudden, noting confusion about identities among attackers.

Reds Strike Ends With GM UAW Tentative Deal Near Ratification

The UAW Local 1423 reached a tentative settlement with General Motors at the Tonawanda foundry after a 14 hour bargaining session. Ratification votes were set for Thursday. The agreement could end a series of foundry strikes idling over 120,000 GM workers nationwide.

Explorers Hunt Missing Subs In Mediterranean Search

In Toulon the undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau and his SP300 diving saucer joined the hunt for the French submarine Minerve missing with 52 aboard. Across the Mediterranean Commodore Shlomo Erel said Israel’s Dakar will be searched until found or evidence of fate emerges. The 1100 ton Minerve vanished after a routine mission. Dakar, 69 aboard, disappeared en route from Britain to Haifa after a two year refit. Beeps and ping echoes sparked renewed hopes as Cousteau piloted the deep diving craft during dawn operations.

Armour Co at 101 Years in Meat Packing and Diversification

Armour & Co now operates 273 plants with about 40,000 employees. Originated in Chicago after Phil Armour and partner bought a Milwaukee building to start packing. Trademarks range from Armour Star Ham to Dial soap. Early history covers Simeon Armour and rapid cattle handling, ice preservation, and development of refrigerator cars. The firm moved to Union Stock Yards in 1872 and exited meat packing in 1959, later expanding into fertilizers, buttons, chemicals, and drugs from byproducts.
