Figures released today by Dr Nat Copenhaver show Sullivan County investments in 1960 Savings Bonds reached 9 percent of the yearly goal. The county ranked third in the district with sales totaling 39,928,000 and 91.0 percent of its quota. National sales stood at 4,330 million, 93.5 percent of the 4,680 million target. Holdings near 49.197 million mark an all time high as the 20th anniversary of Defense Bond purchases begins.
The Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta reports area bank debits rose overall by four percent with Kingsport Bristol and Johny City up four percent Knoxville up sixteen percent Nashville up two percent and Chattanooga down less than one percent December figures were slightly below December 1959 though November showed a rise. R E Mandy Jr of the Nashville branch commented on the figures.
Neel Rich elected president of the Scott County Fair Association for 1961. Officers include P. W. Collins as vice president J. P. Horton secretary CH. Craft treasurer W. Mays assistant secretary Kemp Blackwell livestock general superintendent G A Kaiser assistants William Barer Pattie Snodgrass superintendent of the Ladies Department. Directors set 1961 fair for Dungannon first or second week of September and tasked the new president with publishing the fair catalogue ready by August 15.
Two people were treated at Holston Valley Community Hospital for injuries from Sunday auto crashes. Mrs. Agnes Hamilton, 38, of 378 Dunbar Street, suffered scalp injuries on the Johnson City highway and was released. Mrs. Evelyn Ealey, 34, of 1317 Maxwell Street, received back injuries near Gunnings Virginia and was released.
Bad weather kept lawbreakers away over the weekend. This morning City Court tried two public drunkenness cases, each resulting in a $20 fine. Forfeitures totaled $20 for three cases of public drunkenness, $3 for a red light, $3 each for two stop-sign violations, and $3.49 for two illegal parking incidents. Meter violations forfeited included $1, $0.12, and $0.431. Nashville reports Tennessee commercial hatcheries produced 9,520,000 chicks in December, up nearly 4 percent from December 1999 and above the 1954-58 average. Nationally, hatcheries produced 17,457,000 chicks, up 18 percent from the prior year.
Holstein dairy herds in Sullivan County will be classified today with Jack Fairchild of Berwick, Pa., designated as classifier by W. McClain. Owners should bring cows and registration papers plus calving and dry dates. Visitors welcome at all classification sites. a tight schedule lists farms and times across Monday and Tuesday with multiple owners and participants.
BLACKSBURG Virginia sheepproducers earnings highlighted in the 1960 state Res jluts per Ewe contest. Moneymaker Augusta County earns top Group I with 9.90 per ewe while Lante Frederick County leads Group II with 5.82 per ewe from 50 ewes producing 88 lambs and 308 pounds of wool valued at 1852.01 dollars. Moneymaker’s 40 ewes produced 45 lambs and 189 pounds of wool totaling 1197.85 dollars. Top finishers include Minton Engle Sowder Adams Wine Belford Harmon Bennington with various per ewe averages.
Gate City Virginia—A spring feeder pig sale first of the season will be held in Abingdon May 16, sponsored by the Abingdon Feeder Pig Association. Last November the full sale saw 602 pigs with an average price of 24.58 per hundredweight and pigs averaging 53 pounds. Directors set two more full sales for November 7 and 28. Pigs must weigh 30 to 110 pounds, be vaccinated 30 days before sale, and be consigned six days prior.

Comedian Mel Blanc, 52, was reported progressing satisfactorily today at UCLA Medical Center where he remains under treatment for multiple fractures from Tuesday’s automobile collision. He had been listed in critical condition earlier but is now stable and improving.
