In Whitehaven Cumberland Eng on Jan 29 an explosion trapped miners in a deep pit. Twenty eight killed with sixteen bodies recovered by noon and twelve of the twenty five survivors in serious condition. Cause under investigation.
John Jones, a mechanic and self described son of railroad figure Casey Jones, sits in Memphis jail on a theft charge. He remarks his father loved railroading and treated a locomotive as a living thing while prisoners expect songs about Casey’s last ride.
State Senator Paul Hooten of Randolph county pushes a bill to replace must decree with may in Alabama divorce law. The proposal allows judges to grant wife support only if she lacks a separate estate, arguing husbands deserve a break amid female equality.
At Canon City Colorado three men John Walker Claude Ray and Andrew Hl a day were to be hanged for slaying Coral Hickam deputy sheriff during a March bank robbery in Kansas. Walker's mother visited him and he claimed to have escaped a 20 year sentence.
EvanstonIllinois police magistrate Harry H Porter faced a self court when no defendants appeared. He found the judge guilty for parking in a fifteen minute zone in front of the State Bank and assessed one dollar plus costs.
Coast Guard Cutter 145 chased the rum runner Josephine K to determine if gunfire was necessary for capture. No injuries reported as the vessel was intercepted and brought to port for processing.
G L Hoffman and Col Elgan C Robertson clash over farm aid levels in Arkansas and surrounding states. Robertson says $60 per head needed for livestock feed, with federal loans capped near $30 per head. Hoffman argues surveys justify higher allowances and stresses small farmers will access funds.
Danville Virginia January 30. The four month old textile strike ended with a worker vote and 3600 union members plan to seek reinstatement. Re employment could begin for 800 to 1000 strikers as machinery is readied and more workers may return.
Major General Smedley D. Butler asks retired Major Henry Leonard to act as his counsel for the pending military court martial. Leonard, a longtime Washington lawyer and former assistant judge advocate general, served with Butler in the Boxer Rebellion and once saved Butler at Tientsin during combat.
Washington debates whether Major General Smedley D. Butler will resign as he faces a possible general court martial for remarks deemed derogatory toward Mussolini. Butler is held at Quantico under arrest awaiting charges as Secretary Adams denies a resignation.
A six story fire on upper Broadway in New York during a cold January dawn leveled the Lincoln Square building. More than 200 residents and workers fled to safety as 400 firefighters battled the blaze. Seventeen injured include two grievously burned firemen and two photographers hurt by exploding powder. The Miller building housed artists and theater workers. the main theater suffered no damage. Traffic and crowds halted as police controlled the scene.
Tennessee forecast shows fair tonight and Saturday with colder conditions on Saturday. Virginia outlook calls for general fair tonight and tomorrow, warmer tonight, colder in the west on Saturday afternoon and again Saturday night. High yesterday 56, low 27, no precipitation yesterday. John Wright known as Bad John Wright, 92, dies at his Pound area home after a long career as a mountain feud figure and lawman. He reportedly killed nine people and is blamed in as many as 36 killings. His notoriety inspired a character in John Fox’s Train of the Lonesome Pine. He had recently recovered from illness but died unexpectedly. He was famed for pursuing fugitives and his long memory in the Cumberland mountains.
Senate Democrats at a party meeting pledged to push their relief package to any limit with no compromise. They support a 2.5 million dollar revolving fund for flood relief in the Carolinas and other states, and Caraway plans to renew a 15 million dollar food bar fund fight. The measures are in three appropriation bills for interior, war, and efficiency. failure to enact by March 4 could trigger a spring extra session to fund next year.
Atlanta January report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta shows increases in retail trade but declines in department store sales for 1930, with debits to individual accounts up from December yet down from 1929. Cotton consumption fell, building permits dipped, and crop values dropped about one third from 1929.

He states Tennessee is not attempting to exploit its sovereignty as it acquires lands in East Tennessee for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and notes delays have been costly to Champion Fibre while timber operations were paused.

Nashville Jan 30 The 67th General Assembly set next Tuesday noon as adjournment for six weeks recess while leaders seek money to pay recess committee expenses A deficit of 1244662.02 in the state treasury spurred a bill authorizing borrowing 1400000 to support the state elementary and high school fund unless funded many schools would close Legislation to defray legislative expenses was expected but no recommendations were made at noon State Treasurer John F Nolan warned leaders funds were insufficient to cover recess compensation.
Nashville reports treasury has no funds to pay recess committees forcing a delay in adjournment. Nolan says $70,000 estimate for salaries and per diem may cover only part of costs with travel and stenographic expenses raising the total. House and Senate seek a solution amid a $1,244,662.02 state deficit.
In Nashville on January 30 AP reports two transfers of highway funds made without legal authority. The funds were placed in institutions that subsequently failed, drawing testimony about improper handling and oversight of public money.
