Walker D. Hines director general of railroads urged dividing excess earnings above a reasonable return to protect the public and ensure fair returns for all railroads. He called for compulsory consolidation into a few large systems with public and labor participation in management during a Louisville address with Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood in attendance.
Timothy Shea acting president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen and Samuel Gompers AFL president attack the Cummins bill at the National Civic Association meeting. They accuse railroads of planning wage cuts once privatized and warn of prosecutions to suppress strikes.
The Senate adjourned again as the quorum call failed to reach required numbers. Absences cited include presidential candidates and senators with personal business, hindering Senate business.
Tokio reports the foreign office says Japan acquired German rights in Shantung through peace terms but will seek a sincere settlement with China. It asks China to prepare for talks on retrocession of Kiauchau Bay and other measures and plans to withdraw troops from the Shantung railway unless railway security requires Japan to maintain guards until China forms a railway police.
Central High School presents The Feast of the Red Corn an Indian operetta in two acts by Paul Bliss. The Girls Glee Club directed by Miss Alice Feeney performs tonight in the auditorium with forty nine girls and eight boys in chorus and dance. Lead roles include Ruth Bennett as Chief Maiden of the Tribe Hope Brown as Queen Weeda Wanta Helen Black Old Squaw and Mildred Mahan Impee Light Opal Brandon Margaret Kinzer and Woodrow Pickering as Queen's children. Edythe Brownell is pianist and Joyce Eckhart directs the dancers starting at eight o clock.
The bi partisan discussions were extended as Article Ten would not be taken up today or until Senator Hitchcock returns from a Nebraska trip. Conference leaders intend to tackle other unsettled issues to keep compromise alive and prevent the treaty from being sent to the Senate.

A Berlin express collided with a military evacuation train at Obersk near Derschau. Three people were killed and 15 wounded, including soldiers and civilians, in the collision reported today.

In Grand Rapids on January 30 United Press reports illness reduces defendant and juror numbers in the Truman H. Newberry election fraud trial. Three defendants and one juror were excused due to illness, delaying further proceedings.
A conference of Scandinavian Cabinet Ministers will meet early in February in Christiania to consider Norway Sweden and Denmark joining the League of Nations. The talks aim to decide whether the three nations will seek membership.
Kingsport issued 168 building permits in 1919 with an estimated construction cost of 1,095,160 dollars. Recorder J A Bradley said owners estimated costs. actual totals likely higher. Permits covered 158 residences including the YMCA, four factories, and six business buildings.
The Whetzel murder trial for Lillie Whetzel in the Kingsport Laundry case was moved due to absent witnesses, with trial set for April. Giles arson case also postponed for lack of appearance. Three men charged with operating a 90 gallon whiskey still near Kingsport were sentenced to 90 days in jail and a $250 fine. the still described as the largest seen locally.
A group of Kingsport musicians formed the Kingsport Music Club last Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Joy Patton Thompson. The club aims to promote musical art and mutual member improvement, with bi monthly meetings and programs. Officers include President Mrs. Joy Patton Thompson and Vice President Mrs. W. W. Hufford. Charter members listed.
Dr. S. D. Long longtime Martha Washington College president in Abingdon Virginia will preach at Broad Street Methodist Church Sunday morning and evening. A Vanderbilt graduate he is considered an able minister and is expected to deliver engaging sermons to Kingsport church members.
John R. Snow, trustee of Sullivan County, will collect state and county taxes for 1919 at the Bank of Kingsport tomorrow.
City Health Officer T B Yancey announced seven flu cases this month in Kingsport all in the past ten days. Health official says cases are mild and recovery expected. He urges avoiding crowds and guarding against contagion from sneezing or spitting.
Nashville reports from Jan 29 indicate the influenza and pneumonia death rate remains near normal. Dr. Olin W. West notes no epidemic in any county except Polk, with Memphis 92 cases and no deaths, Knoxville 63 cases with one influenza death, Jackson 25 cases with no deaths, Columbia five cases with one pneumonia death, Clarksville no influenza. Chattanooga did not report.
Ed Houston of Bluff City who lost a leg in France may seek the Democratic nomination for Trustee in Sullivan County. He has just been discharged and will announce soon after returning home. Other candidates show mixed responses to potential withdrawals as T G McChesney proposes to drop out in his favor. Houston is in his twenties and formerly worked in Bristol as a grocery salesman.
D. J. Johnson has purchased four additional lots in Westview Park. J. B. Nall of Nall and Neas announced that Johnson now owns eight lots in the addition and plans to erect dwellings on each of them.
Broad Street Methodist Church Scoutmaster Flem S. Dobyns hosted 35 scouts at the barracks last night. Tenderfeet were inducted into Scouthood, games followed by a large feed, and the report says an immense time was enjoyed by all.
President Wilson sent to the Senate the nomination of Franklin W. Cutcheon as a director of the War Finance Corporation. This official acts to fill a key post in the wartime financial agency.
Joe Strauss of Bristol plans a two story brick building on Broad Street between Market and Main for a modern department store. Lumbers being delivered. work to start within a week. Other local developments include Mays’s new Main Street store with refrigeration and marble counters, Roller’s three buildings on Broad, and major saddlery and glass works under construction with hundreds of workers.
Hammond Post of Kingsport plans a smoker on February 6 to reorganize the post. Secretary George A. Caldwell to obtain reorganization details from National headquarters. Willard M. Smith to arrange music, Sam Anderson refreshments. T. H. Pratt to handle publicity and Dr. J. H. Clifford to be asked to speak.
Mrs Henderson Smallwood slipped on a sheet of ice over a small pool in the backyard on Holston Heights and sustained a broken wrist. She was taken to Community Hospital.
Kingsport High lost the season opener on its home floor as Daleville College defeated them 29 to 19. Brugh and Spigel led the visitors while Flora and Gustwick top-scored for Kingsport. Leeper and Keegan starred on defense as 300 spectators watched.
Miss Carrie Lovette of Greeneville has been appointed Demonstration agent for Sullivan County. She will assume duties February 18, is a Tusculum College graduate with years of experience, most recently in Oklahoma, and will work in the part of the county near Kingsport, making frequent visits to the city.
