Shanghai dispatch says Japanese bombs devastate a Chinese city area amid fires as casualties mount. Chinese authorities warn foreign officials in the international settlement to pressure Japan to end the occupation or risk further attacks.
Judge J M Morton directs a verdict of not guilty for Jasil Reser, president of Holston Union National Bank and Holston Trust, on a $250000 state highway deposit case. He rules the funds were a general deposit, not a trust, and dismisses four related charges. Ramsey says he feels vindicated and grateful amid family and friends in Knoxville.
Formal demand targets Alvin O. King to vacate the Louisiana governor's office. Dr. Paul N. Cyr, Long foe, asserts he is the legal governor while O. K. Allen, Long ally, is set to take office in May after King’s contentious installation by Huey Long.
Tennessee sees cloudy skies and a sharp drop in temperatures tonight with likely rain changing to snow flurries on Saturday. Senator Huey P. Long arrived in New Orleans and dismissed Paul N. Cyr’s push against Governor Alvin O. King as unserious and politically useless. He said Cyr’s lawsuit plans merit no public attention while Long prepares for family settlement and potential talks with banks. Cyr was expected in Baton Rouge for legal discussions.
Detro it January 29 Jack Martin convicted murderer known for breaking free from restraints was recaptured in Grosse Pointe Park six days after his escape from Milledgeville Ga. Leland Harvey who aided him fled when police raided a house Harvey’s fourteenth escape from a death cell followed. Both men had avoided meals for days and predicted a quick capture for Harvey if found.
Washington Jan 29 AP bipartisan cooperation persists in Congress to enact necessary tax increases and ban aid. Senate adjourns to shape banking revision and Glass Walcott conference with Treasury and Fed. Hoover confirms three directors for the two billion reconstruction corporation. House Democrats invite Republicans to join in drafting the tax bill with no retroactive increases.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta reports a modest year end 1931 rise in retail trade for December, though not reaching 1930 levels. Department store sales rose 57.9 percent from November but were 16.5 percent below December 1950, while wholesale trade and building activity fell. Crop values across six states dropped 30.5 percent from 1930. cotton consumption rose in Georgia but fell in Alabama and Tennessee.
Chicago Jan 29 Railway labor unions have agreed to a 10 percent wage cut for one year totaling 215 million dollars with a promise of restored pay after the term. Leaders said they would present a definite set of terms to railroad executives.

Portland England January 29 The admiralty said it is no longer possible to hope for any of the sixty one officers and men lost with the British submarine M 2 last Tuesday. The search will continue at another sea floor site while divers target a reported wreck and two submarine flags. Wives and relatives wait at the dockyard gates as oil patches appear in West Bay and salvage crews pursue sources near the surface.
Eight members of the house naval committee will inspect the Akron to check for defects. Officials consider selling the Los Angeles to fund enlargement of the ZRS-5, sister ship, boosting capacity to 7.5 million cubic feet and cruising range to 11,500 nautical miles.
A naval expert told the House Naval Committee that he saw nothing very reprehensible in the Akron airship being slightly heavier and slower than expected. He offered defense of the craft amid questions about its performance and safety.
Reports from Washington said a truce for Shanghai was signed and to take effect that morning but Shanghai officials denied it and fighting persisted. 2,000 more Japanese marines were reported to be sent to Shanghai with aircraft carriers and cruisers moving from Sasebo as international tension rose involving Britain the United States and the League of Nations.
Shanghai reports a night of terror as Japanese marines attack Chapei. Air raids and fires set multiple districts ablaze, the railroad station burned, and communications with Nanking cut. Chinese sources claim about 300 killed and wounded. Japanese deny major losses.
Tokyo says it has no intention of encroaching on foreign powers in Shanghai and aims to safeguard Japanese nationals and their interests. The government notes its policies mirror prior actions by Britain and other powers and stresses continued close cooperation with international settlement authorities and Shanghai officials.
Mystification and alarm prevail as reports say a truce exists at Shanghai while Japan denies it. The United States and Britain press Japan to inform powers before action in the international settlement. Continued on page six.
